Lyle Lovitt song????

Post by JimmyDreams »

Hi all. Can anyone help me with figuring out the name of a Lyle Lovitt song that I thought I've heard JB play before.

It says something to the effect of "If I had a boat, I'd sail across the ocean. And if I had a something, I'd sail you in my boat."

Those words are obviously wrong, but it's something to that effect. Any help is appreciated. See you all in Atlanta on 4/17.

OOOO that's so tantalizing! I know exactly what song you're talking about, but I don't know the name either!! AAARGH! Maybe a search under "Lyle Lovett discography" would help? If you're like me, you'll recognize the song title if you see it. Other than that, can anyone help a couple of curious Parrottheads??? :D

If I Had a Boat
(Lyle Lovett)

If I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

If I were Roy Rogers
I'd sure enough be single
I couldn't bring myself to marrying old Dale
It'd just be me and trigger
We'd go riding through them movies
Then we'd buy a boat and on the sea we'd sail

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

The mystery masked man was smart
He got himself a Tonto
'Cause Tonto did the dirty work for free
But Tonto he was smarter
And one day said kemo sabe
Kiss my ass I bought a boat
I'm going out to sea

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

And if I were like lightning
I wouldn't need no sneakers
I'd come and go wherever I would please
And I'd scare 'em by the shade tree
And I'd scare 'em by the light pole
But I would not scare my pony on my boat out on the sea

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat
Eleven longhaired friends of Jesus in a chartreuse microbus...

I saw this thread a couple days ago, so I thought I'd respond.

The song just played on RM, which reminded me that as I was channel surfing last night on the boob tube, I saw Lyle Lovett singing on the public TV channel. While I was watching, he sang "If I Had a Boat". It's a pretty cool song.

I found a live version on Kazaa by Jimmy. I wonder if this song inspired him to write Take Another Road.
