Jimmy in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...
I was thinking that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame might need some help in choosing their next entries, and I bellieve that we here at BN (and other Parrot Head communities) are just the ones to help them..So, I say we politely send them thousands of emails nominating Jimmy as an entry...the email address to the executive offices at the Rock n Roll Hall of fame is.... director@rockhall.org.
Anyone else up for sending them an email....? I just sent mine...

I felt the same way and was going to look for where to send an email. Thank you, Mayor, for providing it. I will send my email tomorrow when I am in a better state to write something!fleshandbone wrote:That's cool. When I read about the inductees today, I was thinking Bubba should be there. I never even heard of the Clash. My Email is sent.

for at least 25 + years. I more than totaly agree that Bubba should
alreadfy be in the Hall but there are some other bands and types of
music and just because we don't listen to them all (or at least most)
doesn't mean they haven't worked and played just as hard.
BTW Rock the casbah,Should I stay or shouldI go? and an awesome
cover of I fought the law just to name a few songs..

Don't know your age fleshand bone but the Clash have been around
for at least 25 + years. [/quote]
Not that age has anything to do with it, I know songs from the 1700s to now and never heard of the Clash.
The AP story says:
The Clash burned bright and fast, starting with explosive punk rock and then incorporating funk, reggae and rap. The 1979 album "London Calling" is a critical favorite, and their biggest hits, "Rock the Casbah" and "Should I Stay or Should I Go," came just before the original lineup broke up in 1983.
Hopes for a reunion at the Hall of Fame induction were dashed when lead singer Joe Strummer died of a heart attack on Dec. 22.
So they were around for about 4 years. Maybe they did some good things in that time but it's not the same as having the 30+ years Jimmy has.
They obviously have no songs we know by heart.

Ouch. Reminds me of my mother - she's never heard of the Clash either, but that doesn't diminish the fact that they were extremely influential. Sad that Joe Strummer won't be there tonight....fleshandbone wrote:That's cool. When I read about the inductees today, I was thinking Bubba should be there. I never even heard of the Clash. But I'd sell EVERYTHING I own for tix to the event just to see the Police live.

The R&RHOF and the Grammys are not based on popularity, but on music, including originality, contribution to the larger "whole" and sphere of influence.fleshandbone wrote:

While YOU may have never heard of the Clash, they inspired legions of musicians such as U2 and Radiohead. It was aggressive, simple punk that grabbed you by the throat, and their contribution is pretty well recognized by everone involved with the music business and quite a few folks outside of it.
Hey, I love Buffett, but you'd be hard pressed to convince me that he's done anything musically that deserved either a Grammy or a R&RHOF nomination. He's a great entertainer and a decent songwriter, but he certainly hasn't pushed the envelope with his music or changed the course of it in the way bands like The Clash and The Police did.
I'd say give him a lifetime achievement award or something for successfully surving this long in the music business and still selling out venues - THAT is an accomplishment.

Of course Jimmy got my vote for the Rock-n-Roll Hall....Thought ya'll might like to see the reply I got from "The Hall":
Thanks for your comments.
There is no doubt that rock and roll would not be what it is without the contribution of Jimmy Buffett. At the same time, you should realize that we receive literally thousands of such recommendations, many of which are as worthy as yours.
The entire nomination and induction process is coordinated by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation in New York City. The only criteria is that an artist has to have had their first record 25 years ago. First, the selection of inductees begins with an extensive panel of journalists, historians, previous inductees, industry heads, etc. In turn, those nominated are sent to a committee of more than a 1000 people around the world (journalists, historians, music industry management, all previous inductees, etc.) who vote. Those receiving the highest number of votes and more than 50% of the votes cast are inducted into the Hall. Usually, this means five to seven new members each year. So you can see the road to being inducted is an arduous one and completely out of the realm of influences or politics.
On top of this, people sometimes forget that rock and roll and its artists are viewed in an incredibly subjective manner by any individual brought into the circle of discussion. As such, there is often widespread disagreement or fracturing of opinion about who is or was important. From my perspective, time will tell. I really think that all deserving candidates will have their moment eventually. Unfortunately, it often isn't the time frame they or their fans desire. Remember too, many of the sports greats do not get into their respective Halls of Fame right away either.
