Cover songs

Post by gowarm »

Well we all know that Jimmy has a knack of dusting off someone else's song and covering it and doing it better than expected. What I'm wondering now, with the exception of the tribute albums (raggae, bluegrass, blues) that are out, has anyone ever covered any of Jimmy's songs? Anybody know any?

This ties in nicely with something I saw today. A cd in the "Soundtracks" session for a movie called "September Sessions". The movie is by some guy named "Jack Johnson" I believe. Anyways, the first track is "Pirate Looks At Forty" with Jack Johnson's name beside it. Anyone know if this is the same tune?

I've heard it on the radio and it sounds good! (As does any buffett on the radio!)

Also, Waylon Jennings recorded "He Went to Paris." It's an interesting cover. 8)

Not on any album I don't think, but Clay Walker did "He Went to Paris" at a concert I went to last year. Very good! :P

There is a very intersting web site I stumbled across yesterday. It is http://www.coversproject.com/ and it has lots of information on who covered whose songs and is all based on fan submissions, not the music industry. Check it out! (artists are listed alpha by first name)

Jimmy covers

Post by MRB2112 »

I'm glad I found this thread here.

I'm actually trying to compile a list of songs Buffett has covered. I've got all the obvious ones figured out, but I'm looking for a complete list. Any parrotheads out there have that or know where I can get it?

I've been to that coversproject site and I question some of their listings (it's based on user input).

Also, I heard the new album is gonna have some covers on it. Anybody know what those tunes are/who they're originally by?

Any info anyone could provide would appreciated. I'm trying to make a custom CD of Buffett covers for my old man for his b-day.

Thx, MRB

I made a compilation of live Jimmy covers and it's one of my favorites to listen to...the sound quality on a few of the songs are not so great, but it sure is great hearing Jimmy doing these tunes

If memory serves me it includes:

Tiki Bar (Hiatt)
Sea Cruise (which I'm not is really a cover as it was on one of M'ville cd's)
Johnny B. Goode (Berry)
If I had Boat (lovett)
When My Ship Comes In (Black)
Paradise (Prine)
Everybody's Talkin' (neill)
Gentleman of Leisure
City of New Orleans (Goodman)
She Belongs to Me (Dylan)
In My Life (Lennon)
Here Comes the Sun (Harrison)
Can't Always get want you want (Stones)
Little Egypt
Love Potion #9

I have that! A worthy rendition, I think. Waylon's deep gravelly voice puts a really sad spin on the song.

Scoman, thx for the info. Do you happen to know or know where I could find a complete list of Jimmy's pre-recorded cover tunes? Think I got'em all, but just wanna make sure.

Some of those live ones sound really interesting, espcially the Beatles and Dylan stuff. Where do you get yer mp3s/bootlegs? I usually go with Limewire, but I haven't seen those on there yet.

Would you be open to emailing files/and or discussing some sort of trade/compensenation for you to burn me that disc? Just asking.

Thx again for the info.

kenny rogers has done ...."pre you"...and i think jimmy ought to consider taking..."2 pina colados" by garth brooks for a spin. jimmy could look to his audience to shout out...."margaritas"....in place of ....pc....

I was watching a concert of Kenny Chesney on CMT a few weeks ago and on the song "How forever feels" he sings a verse about Jimmy Buffett and at the end of the song he did a cover of the first verse of Margaritaville.I thought he did pretty good.
