Best Final Encore I have ever seen...

Post by GON2A1A »

My favorite final encore out of the 6 concerts that I have been to has to be Coast of Marseilles.

What is some of your favorites?

A Pirate Looks at 40 is another great final encore that I have seen, but I do not count it since it is a "regular"

Two favorite encores - Both in Atlanta - mid to late 90's.

Lovely Cruise
Tin Cup Chalice

We all know in the past Jimmy would usually come out with Fingers, or Mac, or Amy Lee at times, and do the FINAL encore. For the two listed above, he came out all my himself. It was worth the price of admission just to see the last song. Still, after seeing Bubba 28 times since 1991, the highlight of the show IS the last song. I think most of you will agree.

I have to go with Defying Gravity from Great Woods 1997 or In My Life from the East Hampton show in 2001.

No contest on this one! In one of the first shows played after 9-11 in Chicago, Jimmy suprised everyone on 9-29 by pulling out "In My Life" by the Beatles. This song was played perfectly slow and was so emotional that it had everyone around me, myself included, with tears in their eyes. Its the most moved I've ever been at any concert.

Another Saturday Night > City Of New Orleans were the two preceeding encores

I remember on the Fruitcakes tour in Tampa, he came out all by himself and did an incredible Tin Cup Chalice. Still my favorite.

Absolutely. I agree. In My Life. Chicago 9/29/2001. I was shaking..... This was only my second JB show, and I knew I was about to deploy far from home. Going from almost 30,000 people belting out "Good morning, America, how are you? Say don't you know me, I'm your native son?" to just Jimmy singing very quietly was very, very powerful...

A close second was Tonight I Just Need My Guitar, GW 2002. This was just after I returned from deployment to the FSOTW. "Sometimes more than others, you see who and what and where you are." Whew....

I've got to say last year's Greensboro show. He sang Tonight I Just Need My Guitar followed by Here Comes the Sun as a tribute to George Harrison. Tears were streaming down my face!

This year's Raleigh show. He did "Defying Gravity" and dedicated it to the Columbia astronauts. It was 2 days after the tragedy. I get a lump in my throat thinking about it....

I've always like "Slow Boat to China," with "Coast of Marseilles" a good runner-up.

I agree, Minnie. We were at the Raleigh show. Thought "Defying Gravity" was one of the best encores we'd seen.

Great Thread...the story on the final song...always being a ballard is simply this....In Bubba's early days, he'd finish his set...go back stage...partake in a little self enhancement (shot of something...or snort of something...or both)....then go mingle with the crowd in the club he was playing in....often bringing tropical fruit drinks to his fans....the intimacy is what started the legend as we know it...well as Jimmy's popularity grew the practice of mingling deminished....So today, with a 14 member band and ten's of thousands in the crowd...his touch with that intimacy is that final song......A couple that stand out to me....in San Diego in 2000 he sang Oysters and Pearls one night and Pacing The Cage the other...and in 2001 he did California Promises. This past tour I especially enjoyed TIJNMG and Someday I Will.....But I would love to hear him sing Lovely Cruise in that spot. :D

I lied: while I liked the ones I mentioned having BEEN there, I missed the Dallas concert a while ago whe he did this one, but I've got a CD:

Lovely Cruise, for Pam, the Volcano Lady. I wasn't there, but the CD puts me in tears every time.

But, knowing Pam, I also know she'd kick my ass if I didn't stick to my previous votes, so, back to: "Defying Gravity" and "Stories I could Tell".. and, HELL, this works, since, now that I think about it (I went to lots of shows a couple of years ago, so I forget what and when), but I'm pretty sure that "Defying Gravity" was at the Atlanta show, which would've been Pam's last. Now, I think THAT is fitting.. she was there with us, and DAMN the chemotherapy, she thought it was just right to have a margarita.

I do wish you'd all been able to meet her.
