Dave Matthews cant even sell out his entire tour at all. Another thing everyone MUST UNDERSTAND, and it really is starting to tick me off majorly is, NO ONE UNDERSTANDS THAT WHEN YOU ARE GETTING TICKETS, YOU ARE COMPETING AGAINST 100'S IF NOT 1000'S OF OTHER TICKETMASTER OUTLETS. PLUS ALL THE LAZY ARSE PEOPLE WHO WAKE UP LATE AND TRY TO GET TICKETS ON LINE.

Again... Sir Gumby... another thread but the same message. Because we cannot get out and live your lifestytle of sitting in line for hours at a time, it does not mean we are lazy... I sense by your post that you either have no kids or your day-to-day responsibilities are not too demanding! Either way, it's just the opinion of A PH who works two jobs so that he can enjoy things like concert tix, etc!
I made enough money to buy Miami... but I p*** it away so fast...

Once again, you need to find a way to get tickets. You need to do what it takes to get the tickets to see the show or shows you want to see.

Not sure about your area but even as popular JB is here on the East Coast Dave draws MANY MANY MANY MORE fans at his concerts. Dave in the past has played at Foxboro (now Gillette) stadium on multiple nights with 60,000 - 65,000 people both nights. He'll play Jersey 4 nights in a row and sell out every show. I would be interesting to see but I don't think JB could do that in the big arena'ssirgumby77 wrote:Dlish wrote:Tikcet brokers and season ticket holders take a huge chunk out of the general distribution of tickets. I think the DMB thing has come and gone. I don't think they could fill a 60,000 arena any more. Last week a friend of mine picked up two DMB tickets at Ticketmaster.com for one of the two great woods shows in September, those tickets went on sale almost 5 weeks ago and they were still some left as of Friday. I think Buffett could sell out two shows at Gilette Stadium over Labor day, that would be over 120,000 tickets but it would sell out just not as fast.

I do agree that DMB popularity has diminished over the past 2 years. The shows in September were originally both sellouts when they went on sale ( not really soldout, just couldn't get them thru TM anymore) they have released a bunch more, this is the same with Camden and other venues. Dave still sellsout about 95% of his shows. Remember he tours 20x as much as Jimmy as well. In the grand scheme of things DMB is much more popular than Jimmy Buffett.

One thing though is, all outdoor venues out in the Chicagoland area fit over 40,000 people each. They have tried to have Dave at the World out here twice---just couldnt sell enough tickets ( thats over 80.000 tickets for you people who cant add). He is still doing 2 shows at Alpine this year, One finally sold out, thats the saturday show, sunday still has plenty of tickets available. If they wanted, they could sell over 70,000 tickets for each alpine show.

It seems to me that Alpine was the "hardest ticket to get" this year, based on the BN ticket exchange. There are more ads for Alpine than both Chicago combined. Great Woods only has 1 more, and that total is also for 2 shows. I know we still need another handful of tickets for our group, and so do other large groups out there.
It's not because it's a small venue by any means. I think the tailgating draws more of the midwesterners from neighboring states than Tweeter, as well as pholks from across the country.
Whatever it is, I can't wait! I will be there with bells on!
note to self: add bells to outfit!

Gumby is right, though I wish I could get as many people together when tickets go on sale as he does-my friends just generally are not available and i am just not willing to tell them they can't go to the concert is they are not there.
When you compare Buffett ticket sales with others such as DMB, keep in mind that unlike other acts, Parrotheads around the country are trying for tickets for just about every venue. Most fans see the artist they love in the closest city to where they live-not true with us and evidenced by all the talk of how many concerts each of us is going to Figure all the ticketmaster outlets in the area of the concert, plus phone calls and computers going nationwide.
Also figure that it has become apparent to everyone that if you get tickets and don't want them you can always sell them so lots of non-fans and brokers are doing everything they can to get tickets. The Thursday night Tinley concert, which is not his "hottest" ticket had nearly 200 entries on EBAY within 10 hours of tickets going on sale!!!
And it is only going to get worse!
Go in person, bring lots of people if you can, and do not stand together when lottery numbers are distributed-that is your best chance.

I have 2 extra lawn for Alpine. 2 members of our phlock have to go to a wedding. I don't want to go through anything complicated, just send me a PM if you are in Milwaukee and interested. I'll let you know when and where to find me. Face value, face-to-face exchange. (I paid $46.30 per ticket after TM charges)

I'm sure if DMB shortened their tour to the amount that Buffett does, they would sell out just as fast (if not faster) as Buffett. Some reasons why they're not doing so hot this year:
1) They're touring without promoting an new album. They've been touring the past 5 summers and are starting to rehash their setlists more, hence less newbies interested...
2) The economy is down. Even though their ticket prices are well below other respected acts (Rolling Stones, etc), their fan base is still only in the 16-late 20's range. This age group (probably) does not make as much cash as the typical Buffett age group (30's-50's mainly).
And yes, I a DMB fan (hardcore) AND a Buffett fan. Went to Buffett @ Alpine for the third summer in a row and HAD A BLAST. The Buffett tailgate experience has always been better DMB. People are friendlier, crazier, and it's a great party. But in terms of actualy peformance, DMB wins hands down. More energy, better changes in setlists, etc.
But to each their own...

hi. was reading all your horror stories, but didn't see any from pittsburgh. this year was the first time in 9 years our group got shut out. we usually wait in line, but this year our group was smaller so we decided to try online and by phone. i estimate that, at the latest, 10:10 the tickets were already gone. starlake amphitheater holds somewhere between 22,000 and 25,000 depending on shows and set up. within in an hour, there were pages and pages of tix for sale on ebay..... it's just so frustrating.

I had some interesting experiences with TM this year for JB at Alpine. First, tickets were originally supposed to go on sale two or three weeks earlier than they did. I talked to one of the milwaukee radio stations about that and they said that JB postponed ticket sales due to the war in Iraq. Still don't understand why that really mattered, but whatever.
Then, on the day of on-sale, the show wasn't even listed on TM's web site until like 5 minutes before 10am. So I finally get in and request my 8 lawn seats, keep hitting refresh, then got the tickets and when I went to process the order, got some unexpected error and got booted out. I e-mailed TM telling them about the errror, figuring that I came away with zero tickets. The replied the same day asking for all my info, including order number and venue, artist, etc. I gave them everything I had, except the order number (due to the error, I never got that far). They replied back the next day confirming that I had all 8 tickets and that I should should see the posting to my credit card, which I did see on Monday. Funny thing is though, never once did I see my order listed on their website in the following months. Did get the tickets, though and of course, the show was awesome, as usual!!
So, TM must have had something f'ed up for that particular ticket sale, because I have had the best luck buying tix for all the shows I've wanted online. Don't always get the best seats if I was looking for reserved, but almost always get tickets. Usually, if I wait in line at TM outlet, I always get screwed being like number 10 in the lottery for line spots. So I quite going in person and started using online because I've had better results.
Just my experiences. I saw someone mentioned that JB should not use TM. I have a quick story that gives me no right to complain about TM's fees or practices. Springsteen announced a show at Miller Park here in milwaukee for September (capacity ~ 50,000) and they used tickets.com, not TM. So i go online the day of on-sale, and after the gates open, tickets.com says that I'm "in line" and they will only refresh the browser every 30 seconds. Any hit of refresh button just restarts the timer at 30 seconds. Talk about BS!!! That's an eternity for a show like that. Needless to say, by the time I actully got through, all the tickets were gone (sold out in like 5 minutes, is what I heard). A few weeks later, they released more tickets, so I actually got the two I was looking for, but it sure makes me realize that TM has their sh*t together. I don't like the ever-increasing fees either, but if it means it's more likely for me to get tix for the shows I want, I'm happy.
