Houston Chronicle Review

Post by phjim »

The Houston Chronicle has a review of Tuesdays show in Houston: "Jimmy Buffett kicks off summer his own special way" by Ken Hoffman.

This was opening night for his Tiki Time Tour, and Buffett had the stage dressed with Polynesian torches, palm trees, an open-air tiki bar and, if you looked closely, Wilson the volleyball from Tom Hanks' movie Cast Away.

Of course, the crowd roared for Buffett's imaginary national anthem, Margaritaville...
IMAGINARY?? Who Knew?? :o :o

Just think, the doctor who's examining your X-rays today was dancing the conga and screaming the words, "I don't know where I'm a-gonna go, when the volcano blows" just the other night.

Cool review. I can't wait 'til August 30th.
Today is the tomorrow you spent yesterday worrying about. Was it worth it?

I thought this was a well-written review and enjoyed it. BUT perhaps it is a case where the deadline comes before the end of the show or a case where the writer wanted to beat the crowds by leaving early and was told what the encore would be. The encore, you see, was not Teach Your Children as was reported, but He Went To Paris. Right??? That's what I remember and what the set list posted on this site says. Oh, well. The rest was well done. Too bad.

To SchoolGirlHeart - I love your screenname. I am the co-writer of School Boy Heart (yea, it made the new CD!) and I have seen some of your posts as I check in here from time to time and have enjoyed them thoroughly. And thanks for the "IMAGINARY?? Who knew??" That made me L-A-F-F-F.

COOL!! THANK YOU for SBH... One of the BEST songs around, IMHO, both the words and the tune! Nomad feet and wandering toes... that's me! :D

Backbeat: I agree with you. It was either a deadline or the need to beat the crowd. Let's hope it was the deadline. I'd hate to think a reviewer would leave a show for any other reason.

It was a great show and Jimmy was in good form...and great voice, I thought.

Can't wait to see what changes between Houston and Dallas.

SBH is awesome... thanks backbeat!

I liked the review too, and thought this was cute... "That's what you get at a Jimmy Buffett concert. Nuts and coconuts."

I've met Ken Hoffman and have one of his books.
He writes a column in the Chronicle T-Th-Sundays and is a PARROTHEAD!

I don't know how or why he screwed up on the encore, but I thought the review was awsome!

At last, a review written by a PH that really gets it rather than some guy on the paper that just wanted free tickets.

My favorite part.............
He's a one-man traveling goofy good time. You don't have to look at the stage to know who's up there performing. Who else's fans come dressed in parrot hats, grass skirts and coconut-shell bras?
For one night, their wives tolerate it.

Thanks Ken!!!!

I know the last song was He Went to Paris, but didn't the encores start off with a cover song? The set list shows Saxophones, band intros, Southern Cross and the He Went to Paris... I thought he played something else right before Saxophones.

Of course, I've slept since then so all bets on my memory are long shots at best..........

This was in Ken Hoffman's column in the Houston Chronicle today:

I enjoyed reading your review of Jimmy Buffett's concert at the Woodlands Pavilion. I liked the show, too. But you got the wrong Crosby, Stills and Nash song for his encore. The title is Southern Cross.

Have you noticed how that crowd at his shows is getting more subdued (and more gray)? When they start selling Depends at the concession stands, that's when I will quit seeing him.

-- Tom Thomas, The Woodlands

Hey, gray hair beats what's happened to Buffett. He's pretty shiny up top. He's even changed the lyric in Pencil Thin Mustache from "I don't cut my hair" to "Somebody stole my hair."
