Cheeseburger Chesney
I was at the Kenny Chesney concert last night at Starlake and I was surprised when Kenny and the band broke out with CHEESEBURGER IN PARADISE! He did a good job with it too. I know Kenny is a Jimmy fan and played parts of Margaritaville before at his live shows but never thought he would do Cheeseburger.

Yea his tour is Seniorita's and Margaritas. He is definately try to get a more Carribean persona like Jimmy. His new album is called No Shoes, No Shirts, No Problems. I have been to two of his concerts in the last three years and when he says "Now I know how Jimmy Buffett feels" in his song How Forever Feels he has broke into Margaritaville both times. He could never be a Jimmy Buffett as much as he tries though!

I just bought my tickets to see Kenny on 6/13 in Phoenix, so if no one else sees him before that, I'll post back with what Buffett-esque things he does in concert. I've heard (mainly on here) that he's a devout ParrotHead, but I haven't ever seen him in concert.
Also, on a related note, the last time I saw Jack Johnson (who has been discussed in here before) he did "A Pirate Looks at 40" ("...I'm an under 40 victim of fate...") and said how when he grew up, while he was learning the guitar, he'd play Buffett songs for his family. But, then again, he's not out on a tour called "Senoritas and Margaritas."

I think Kenny Chesney is following a Jimmy like path. Except he has received fame faster. Nashville singer/songwriter begins to add a Caribbean feel to his music. He doesn't have the Charisma that Jimmy has...but how people in the world do.......I'm sure you have all seen this pose before...its from the back over of the "NO Shirts..." CD.

I think Kenny's acknowledgement that he is a Parrothead at heart is good enough to allow him to do a few of Jimmy's songs, after all Jimmy does the same with some of his favorites. It is a respect thing. I've seen a few of his interviews and he not only likes the beach scene, he wants to live it every chance he gets. Bottom line in my view is, Jimmy would be honored and pleased to have his music performed by someone who gets it and is doing it before sold out crowds.

Excellent observation TSITC!
This Chesney guy looks really out of place though, like a real cowboy in the jungle. I don't think there will ever be anyone quite like Jimmy and gone are the days when a guy comes out with an album with a cover like AIA! Imagine one of today's music personalities with an album cover of them in cut-off jean shorts, crusty yellow t-shirt, Mich Light in one hand and the look on their face like they've had about 20 of them! Buffett caught the magic atmoshpere of Key West with that snapshot and thats exactly what I picture myself in the Key's looking like in the 70's.
Chesney doesn't have the look.......at all..........or the sound, but I respect him for trying!

Luni.....I really don't think Chesney was trying to capture Key West...afterall you are so on target with the A1A cover...I Think he captured the look and feel of Parrot Heads...relaxing at the beach. In today's PC world....he couldn't have a Corona in his hand or look stoned....but he does capture the laid-back feel of being a Parrot Head.Luni'sBackYard wrote:Excellent observation TSITC!

I don't know Chesney, other than his name. I've never heard him. If he is singing because he likes Buffett songs, or because he is a Parrot Head, I see nothing wrong with that. As it has been pointed out, Jimmy does covers of other people's songs (usually better than the original). I think it's a tribute to a song writer that someone wants to do his works. And let's not forget Jimmy gets royalties.
However, if Chesney is trying to capitalize on Jimmy's name and persona, than I think that s*&ks. As John Lennon said, "Imitation is the flattest form of insincerity."

First, Kenny has made it own his own, he has his own following and doesn't need a boost from Parrotheads. Jimmy obviously approves of Kenny, he had him sing with him in Nashville. It would appear that we would be happy that someone as successful as Kenny, who is one of us in the heart, brings additonal attention to Jimmy's music. It seems like a win, win situation, when one high profile performer pays tribute to another. Recently I heard a clip from an interview with Toby Keith and he said he admired Jimmy and would love to write something with him. Then he said he has the best fans and gig going today. How can this praise hurt?

Watch Cmt's "most wanted live" show and you'll see Kenny's brand new video for "no shoe, nos shirt, no problems" . It's very buffett, in fact Kenny does a very jimmy like speech to introduce the song, something along the lines of " I only feel comfortable anymore at the beach".
Kenny's a good guy and people shouldnt write him off just cause he loves jimmy, we all do, and if jimmy's ok with him shouldnt' we?
Also I seen Kenny twice in concert 4 years ago and last summer, at which I wore one of my Jimmy shirts and leis and beads, basically my tailgate clothes , I was immediatly picked out of the crowd by other parrotheads and we had a great time together, I dont get how people go see buffett tribute bands like A1A and then have the nerve to b**** about Kenny.
One last thing, on this tour Kenny has been known to bring a big picther of margaritas out to the people who get there early to tailgate and has a few with them! That should say everything about what kind of guy he is.

An article from Houston's On-Line Country Community:
Kenny Chesney Surprises Fans At Jimmy Buffett Concert
Kenny Chesney made a surprise guest appearance at Jimmy Buffett's concert stop in Nashville on Saturday, April 19th, at the AmSouth Center. Chesney joined Buffett and rock singer/songwriter Todd Snider on "Volcano" toward the end of Buffett's standing-room-only show.
"These are the moments where you can't even believe this is your life," Chesney said. "All those nights of listening to his records, thinking 'This guy knows how to live -- he gets it.' All those nights, sitting on a stool playing for tips. That's what my life is made of. Then one night, you're onstage, you look over and realize 'This isn't my show... and that's Jimmy Buffett!' It's pretty cool. And the fact that he's such a great guy on top of it!"
