Although I like this album on some levels, I'm disappointed with it too. Following after the excellent Barometer Soup, I had high expectations for this one. The problem seems to be a kind of dismal tone that lurks throughout. It is sort of masked by the steel drums, horns, and exotic rhythms. But reading the lyrics, there isn't much of the happy, carefree attitude found on even the preceding Baro. Soup and Fruitcakes. And with the music itself, there are a lot of minor chords; something that makes this album not very good for playing at a party (same goes true for Somewhere Over China, or his first two albums). Also, some of the repeated lines in the songs are really goofy ("You'll be pushing up the daisies in an old boneyard", "Will I see you in heaven, will I see you in hell", and the chorus for Mental Floss).
A album better suited to listening to by yourself.

Blammo, Maybe you just don't understand the lyrics. "Pushing up the daisy's in some bone yard" equates to dead and buried which will happen to all whether we enjoyed life or not. Better to be happy and enjoy our time here and now instead of waiting and then finding oneself in the "boneyard". "...heaven or hell" What will you be accountable for? What are you doing in life for which you will be judged? JM knows what he is or isn't doing for which he will judged, do you? Maybe you are just young yet? Can't say that I like JB's earliest work but I do like Banana Wind as well as most of his work. But no one can please everyone all the time. Hope he pleases himself and let everything else fall where it may.

Another wonderful album from JB, this is a very good collection. I love False Echoes, and Only Time Will Tell. This is a great example of the 90's Buffett, other than Fruitcakes. When I first got it, it was about the only thing I listend to for about 3 weeks. I love it!

I love this album. One of my top favorites. It's the only thing that got me through my 40 min. commute to my 3-week Mayterm class last year. I listened to it all 15 days all the way there and back. Had it memorized by the end of the first week. Nothing like listening to Buffett cruising down the highway with your windows down in May.
