Settle a bet for me...

Post by onelongweekend »

Okay all, a 6 pack of Corona is riding on this one...

I say Jimmy Buffett is connected with (owns, ownership) with Caribbean Soul.

My friend says "not true" as evidenced by their discontinuing the JB song shirts due to a legal battle. She insists everyone simply associates their shirts with Jimmy Buffett.

Is there a connection? If not, does everyone associate Caribbean Soul with Jimmy Buffett anyway?

I believe (not 100% positive) that Jimmy had a licensing deal with them.

Jimmy started the company (with Sunshine Smith, I think) when he saw "bootleg" T-shirts being sold and it pi$$ed him off, for two main reasons...

First and foremost he wasn't getting any royalties from the sales,
and secondly, most of the time his name was spelled wrong!

I'm not sure if he is still running it tho, since they have branched out. However he must be connected somehow as the last Coconut Telegraph I received still had some of their shirtsfor sale.

You're absolutely right! Jimmy started the company and created his first Margaritaville store in Land's End Village (with no bar or stage) in Key West in the mid-'80s as a way to sell the product line. He hired his old friend Sunshine Smith to run it.
Also am not sure about Jimmy's current status with the company, but I'm sure some kind of connection remains....
