Any Geocachers on here?!?

Post by ParrotheadCMC »

We've been sucked into something as addicting as a Buffett concert, geocaching. Just wondering if there are any other geocachers on here. I'm looking to place a Buffett Traveling Bug near Pine Knob VERY soon :)

For those of you that don't know what geocaching is, it's high tech hide and seek. You need a GPS and the internet. You find coords online at Http://www.geocaching.com. You plunk those into your GPS and set off in search of the "cache". Most of the times the cache is a container that you swap goodies out of. We leave "parrot" items, necklaces, keychains, etc.

It's pretty fun....just wondering if anyone else on here does it. Oh and our caching name is Parrothead Dou.

Sorry, I am not a geocatcher. Sounds interesting though! How far do you go to hunt down these crates?

They are every where in the world...so as far as you want. So far we haven't gone outside of 30 miles and we've done about 21.

I'm familiar with the concept but haven't tried it yet. I've been invited to give it a shot this summer though and am looking forward to it.
Indecision may or may not be my problem....

I just checked out the website, and this sounds really cool! Can you give us some more information on it? What exactly do you find? What's in these things? Do you take the contents and replace them with others? How exactly does this work with the GPS? Does it pinpoint you to the exact spot, or do you have to find it with the clues? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm seriously interested in this.

And what's the best treasure you've found so far? And the weirdest place you've found a crate?

We've been playing for a little over a year. 48 caches found, 10 travel bugs found along with 10 benchmarks. It is addicting, it also gets us out of the house. BlackBeard94 is the name I use. If you go to the website, I belive that there are several Buffett related caches and Travel Bugs. I have purchased 4 Bugs myself and plan to let them loose soon, all with Jimmy in mind.

As far as playing it is pretty easy, you put in the zip code for the area your in, it then gives you all caches in that area. You look at the one you would like to find, I always print the page. You input the coordinates into your GPS. Follow the directions on the printed page to the starting point and away you go. On the page you will find a terrain and difficulty rating. I recommend a couple of easy ones to start with.

Most GPSs are accurate to about 3 meters, so you will be in the general area. You now have to hunt for the container, could be an ammo can, tupperware bowl or just about anything, but it will be discribed the the directions. The rule is if you take an item, you leave something. You always sign the guest book.

Sometimes the caches are virtual, so by means of just arriving, you have found them, these are generally a great scenic location, landmark or somthing similar. These one ask you to e-mail the owner of the cache with answers to some of the questions asked to verify you were there. After a hard day of caching, with a Margarita by your side you log you finds for the day on the geocaching.com web site.

You can also create and hide your own cache and watch as other people hunt for them.

I think blackbeard did a good job of answering most of your questions. If you still have some, ask away :)

To get the coords into my GPS, I use a freeware program called EastGPS. I download the coords from the geocaching website into the program. My GPS came with a computer link, so I link um' up and then transfer the info.

My GPS gets you within a few feet, then you're looking for something out of the ordinary :)

The coolest thing I've found is an unused (new in package) tye-dyes beach ball. I normally leave handmade parrot necklaces or keychains. I have them on my website :)[/img]

Sounds interesting. There was, in fact, an article in our newspaper the other day about Geocaching. Could someome recommend a relatively inexpensive GPS unit? What features should I look for?

I had heard about this before but forgot about it. We just did our first geocache last night (GC6173), and we were succesful! It was really cool and we found a beautiful little lake with geese that was unknown to us. I'm now addicted!

Hey.... me too.. I geocache!!! Love it!
I don't have enough time to do it as much as I like.. hmm.. that sounds kinky doens't it? :o

I got a Magellan Sport Map for my birthday. I am still trying to figure out everything it does.
Glad to see there are other Parrotheads that enjoy it. I know there are a couple on the geocahing message board that I have stumbled across but otherwise you don't hear too much about it.
I think a Buffett travel Bug is a great idea.
Keep us posted.

Just want to bump this back to the top. Anyone who reads this should look into geocaching, it's highly addictive.
