Wasted Away In Kenny Chesney-Ville

Post by TheSecretsInTheCrust »

Last night I caught "The Margaritas'N'Senoritas" Tour at Chula Vista's Coor's Amphitheater. Chesney's show has many, Buffett-esque qualities. The show opened with a video of a beach with waves reaching up to a black hat on a beach. The video also included Chesney sailing and partying on a beach. He was wearing a Beach Boys t-shirt that looked like a Carribean Soul style design on the back. He talked to his fans like he was talking to each person individually....very JB like. He mentioned "I knew tonight was going to be fun when I saw people in the Parking lot at 2 PM drinking beer and having fun." Beach balls seemed to "Magically" appear in the crowd as soon as he appeared on stage! He managed to get all of his hits in and covered JB's Cheeseburger in Paradise and John Cougar's Jack & Diane. He made many, many references to being Nashville's only confirmed beach bum. His newest single being released is his most Buffett-esque song to date, titled "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems". I find his music to include a strong Buffett influence and his stage looked like JB's 2000 tour stage, a multi level setup with a VERY talented band behind him. As the band played the music to Aerosmith's Walk This Way, Chesney stood at the edge of the stage and signed autographs for a solid 10 minutes. After reading the thread on Chesney, I had to see for myself....I completely enjoyed myself at this energetic show and would see him again.

Very Buffett-esque. He has a house on St. Thomas and spends his "free" time there on his boat. That is where the picture is from... :D

I've been listening to the local country station to hear JB and AJ, and like the Chesney songs. Great review Secrets - thanks! May have to see for myself!

It will be interesting to see if Jimmy actually does a country album next, if the country community will be receptive to him. Alan definitely got his foot in the door with the probable #1 song. And country isn't just western any more... lots of influences and crossover to rock, pop, and beach music.

I noticed last night that there were a lot of rock n roll fans there. People that were soured by hip/hop and rap...is there a difference?.....country music like Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban and Toby Keith are much closer in style to the Eagles, Bob Seger and John Cougar then say George Strait or George Jones.

On a related note regarding expanded boundaries for country music... stations are playing the Kid Rock / Sheryl Crow duet...

Maybe i'm the only one who thinks this, but to me he is nothing close to Buffett. But think about this,No shoes, no shirt, no problems is Chesney's 6th cd. I was just thinking about Buffett's 6th cd, and is it Havana Daydreamin. Maybe i'm the only one who thinks this, but i think there's no question which cd is better.

I don't know Chesney or his music, but there's been so
much talk about him here, both positive and negative,
I guess I'd better see for myself!

PHat Matt said that Mac had songwriting credits on a Kenny song or two? Care to verify Matt? I guess if can't write your own songs, may as well get Mac to do it...

But, I dug this one out a few pages because I saw Kenny a week or so ago in Phoenix and had to toss some observations out there as well:

I really liked the fact that one of his last songs was "Cheeseburger." Yes he flubbed some lyrics, but he was having a great time, as was the crowd. Nice to see him paying some homage to JB who he is obviously a phan of.

When Kenny sings, "Now I know how Jimmy Buffett feels" in How Forever Feels he got the largest applause/screams of the night. Apparently I wasn't the only ParrotHead in the audience.

I was sitting lawn, but I could have sworn he was wearing a vintage JB concert t-shirt with the sleeves cut off. I really need to get new glasses...

The video montage during No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problems of Kenny in the Virgins could easily be mistaken for Jimmy and any Caribbean island if it wasn't for that goofy hat and huge pectorals. :P

Anyway, my conclusion is that the Buffett INFLUENCE is there, but I don't think I'd say the RESEMBLENCE is. But then again, Kenny never professed to wanting to BE JB.
