I second what Ragtop said. I could also do without a few of the regulars also, but I've seen enough shows to loose count and don't plan on stopping until he does. It's still just about the best time you can have for an entire day.

The shows that have been to in 2003 have included songs such as Boomerang Love, Burn That Bridge, Sail on Sailor, In The Shelter, Everybody's Talkin, Apocalypso, Coast of Marsielles, Tampico Trauma, Honey Do, Pascagoula Run, Gravity Storm, and Saxaphones..These are songs that I have never heard live. I personally would pay the price of addmission just to hear 3 or 4 songs that i have never heard.
It sounds like you are angry that Jimmy has to play the 15 or so mandatory songs. Well, thats because the majority of people who attend the shows are not as die hard phans as we are. I think it sux too but at this point in time Jimmy should get to choose what he wants to do, not what we want him to do. Maybe Come Monday and Volcano are his favorite songs.
Don't swear off JB shows, you will regret it when he decides to retire

Just my 2 cents here...
I could pick out a 50 song setlist that I would love to hear, and it wouldn't include 1 song from SYKBH. His best stuff and my favorite stuff is the stuff that 50% of the people at a concert have never heard.
That being said, I'll be seeing my 13th and 14th concerts next weekend, and I've had nothing but a blast at any of them. He knows what brings people to the shows, and like I said before, half the people wouldn't come back with out "Cheeseburger" and "Get Drunk...."
I, like so many others, wish he'd get back to the roots some, as he does at small shows and some benefits...But I won't complain, I look forward to the shows all year round

As much as I agree, I'd hate to go to a show and not hear Margaritaville - that is why we're all there anyway, right?
Does anyone want to take a guess and estimate what percentage of people at any particular show have never been before? Of 25,000, maybe 5%?
With that said, I can't disagree with what he's doing now either. If I were him, I'd be doing just enough to get new sails on the boat, fill the avgas tanks on the jet, and take 3 weeks to surf and bonefish in Hawaii. God I need a vacation.

While I certainly agree with everyone...One interesting thought...
I know I certainly got hooked on Buffett by hearing my parents play SYKBH. While my dad is a much bigger fan now then he was then...It's what got me liking Buffett, which led to getting the box set, and now owning every CD he's ever been any part of...
Point is I would bet most people who are huge prtheads now started out listening to SYKBH, hell, I wasn't even alive when he was getting popular

First of all, I think you're exaggerating the songs he ALWAYS plays. It's really only about 1/3 of the show:
(1) Margaritaville (Nat'l anthem - there would be riots if he didn't play); (2) WDWGDAS (which he manages to give a new flavor to every year - I love this year's version); (3) Fins (much too much fun at concert w/ the "dance" and could never cut it); (4) OPH (just an all out classic and my favorite - I would cry if he didn't play it); (5) Cheeseburger (personally, this is the one I think he could cut); (6) Come Monday; (7) Volcano; (8) Southern Cross; (9) Pirate.
Then I think he picks a FEW from an assortment of popular songs, but not ALL, such as (1) Boat Drinks; (2) CILCIA; (3) SOASOAS; (4) Gypsies; (5) Pencil Thin Moustache; (6) Grapefruit; (7) Mexico; (8) Coconut Telegraph.
The remaining approximately HALF of the show are typically more obscure OR new songs. This year the album is about half remakes of more obscure old songs, and he's playing them! He's also sometimes throwing in Mango, Honey Do, Mental Floss, etc. So I'm not sure what the complaint is. Last year it was FSOTW, and he played a lot from that as well.
And frankly - what's Jimmy supposed to do when he's faced with a crowd that goes absolutely WILD at Margaritaville and Fins, and just sort of sways or goes to the bathroom when he plays something like "In the Shelter"? (Although I haven't been this year yet, so it's just an example, and it's not a slight of the song b/c I personally like it).
I love ALL of Jimmy's music, but I go to the show to hear the SYKBH and to take part in the energy of the crowd when he plays them. At home, I don't play them as much so that I'm not sick of them when I listen to the live broadcasts or go to the show.
This is just my two cents - feel free to forward to Jimmy!

Most musicians play the same set list from city to city-even the bantor becomes the same, and you can often tell it by how flat they sound, and unenthuisiastic. so as much as I would like more variety in his set lists, we are getting more than most (with the exception of a few groups).
but, another point---how many other musicians are there whose concerts you have gone to more than a couple of times??? The Buffett thing is a unique experience-we go to multiple concerts each year, for many, many years. Few artists attract that sort of loyalty.
I saw Fleetwood Mac last night-I am sure that if I saw them tonight, or next week, or if i had seen them last week it would be the exact same concert. The difference is that I don't do that with them, just Jimmy.

Everyone has their opinion but why do people b**** about the set list? I've been to over 30 shows since the 70's and loved every one of them. He changes the list quite efficiently. Unlike alot of entertainers, Buffett is acquiring new fans every year. Just look at how Parrothead clubs have exploded and keep growing. Buffett clearly puts alot of thought into what he is doing. And since his goal for the audience is fun, I think he pulls it off better than any entertainer today.

To expand on what SmartWoman said, let's break down the Pine Knob set list:
Songs Played EVERY YEAR (10):
Come Monday, Changes in Latitudes, Margaritaville, One Particular Harbour, Cheesburger, Why Don't we get Drunk, Pirate Looks at 40, Fins, Volcano, Southern Cross.
Songs Unique to this SET LIST (16):
Great Heart, Coconut Telegraph, Pencil Thin, In the Shelter, Son of a Son, Burn That Bridge, Honey Do, Natives are Restless, Tiki Bar, Everybody's Talkin, Mental Floss, She's Got You, Boat Drinks, Boomerang Love, Mexico, Saxophones
Songs Unique to this SHOW (3):
Far Side of the World, It's My Job, Pacing the Cage.
So, by those numbers, 35% of the songs are played ever year, 55% of the songs are played just on this set list, and 10% of the songs are unique to the show. I certainly don't have a problem with 35% of the show being devoted to the songs that got him to where he is today. This is proof that the majority of the concert is made up of songs that change every year.
The only point you make that I can't defend is the fact that the set list never changes night to night. It would be nice if the 55% of the show that changes each year changed each night so that we could hear everything, but it doesn't. That's the way it is, and it's been that way as long as I've been following JB; we know that going in. Personally, I only go to 2-3 shows a year, and most of them are spread out (I've never been to more than one show on a particular leg), so it doesn't bother me that they are the same.
The problem here is Radio Margaritaville. RM is a wonderful thing that lets us be a part of the shows when we're not there. But, when we listen every night (as I usually do), we have heard the same songs over and over again. If you went to two or three shows a year and didn't have RM, I tend to think the songs wouldn't wear out on you.
Now, it may say under my name that I registered here in May, but I have been reading this board and JimmyDreamz for several years and am familiar with many posters. CMC, I don't ever remember you complaining about the set lists in 1999, 2000, and 2001. You started complaining about this time last year. I remember you said you had tickets to several shows, and after the second one, you decided to sell them because you hated the set list. So, perhaps I am wrong, but it seems to me that your frustration is not that the set list doesn't change from night to night or not that 35% of the show never changes from year to year but rather your frustration is over the 2002 and 2003 set lists. If so, it seems to me like a knee jerk reaction to swear Buffett off out of frustration over two years' set lists.
If you truly wish to quit going, that is obviously your choice. However, as others have mentioned, you will regret this in the future when there are no concerts.

Yes, I completely agree with this. Unfortunately, when we listen 6x in 2 weeks we can easily see that even Jimmy's banter doesn't vary much (as someone else pointed out earlier). In fact, just so it stays fresh for me, I am going to try to listen to only 1 more RM broadcast, and none in Aug. leading up to Great Woods where I'm going. But if you're only listening 1-3 times per year, you'd have to be insane to get sick of the live shows (or you're not a PH - remember, it's a state of mind that is epitomized in the live shows!!)Gypsy In The Palace wrote:

Sooooooooo......(Auntie said while shaking a loving but motherly finger) maybe what we've learned here is that too much of a good thing is really not a good thing. A real life analogy that my real life mom used on me: She'd say, "You like chocolate cake don't you?" The answer was naturally, "YES!" Then she'd say, " but you wouldn't want to eat it EVERY day because then it wouldn't be as special anymore."
Jimmy's shows (to me) are like chocolate cake. If I hear them all the time, it's not as special and magical as it is when I only get to see him (maybe) once a year and listen on RM a few times a year.
That's just what works for me. Just because I COULD doesn't mean I WILL.
Do what works phor you.
Different strokes for different pholks, ya know?
Your pal,
Auntie

Wow you pholks are good
I especially liked the posts by SmartWoman and Gypsy.
I probably can't add much but I have followed the setlists for each of the last several summers and think we've heard a great variety. Look at the Setlists posted on this site and you can figure it out. Unlike some, I like following the setlist evolution from concert to concert. It's become kind of a guessing game: wondering what songs get dropped, where they play best, which ones make the cut.
SmartWoman and Gypsy, I did a bit of figerrin' on my own and here is what I came up with:
Since the Tiki Time Tour started there have been 8 concerts.
51 different songs at those concerts.
16 songs were played at all 8 concerts.
Of those 16 songs 8 were technically SYKBH.
All 13 SYKBH were played at at least one concert.
I may have miscounted but those numbers should be pretty close.
IMHO it wouldn't be a Buffett concert without some of those SYKBH.
People look forward to them and some would be disappointed going home without hearing them. And they are different songs for different people.
Also, some phans (like me) only get to one concert a year and like hearing the old favorites live. This year there are 25 of us going together to the Pittsburgh concert, 5 of them are Buffett virgins. I wouldn't know how to explain it to them if he didn't play Margaritaville or Volcano.
Just one more point before I end this rant. Some songs are better at a concert at a large venue, some in a smaller live setting and some you might be better of listening to the recorded version.
Whew, wore myself out with this long post, I need a Corona.
