Which version Do You Prefer of 5 O'Clock Somewhere?

Post by Mplsfins »

I personally love the version with Mac and Jimmy from Baltimore on 7/3/03. Compared to Alan's version it is just country sounding with the twang in his voice and all. While I like it I would love to hear a Jimmy and Alan version live and unedited.
Your thoughts all?

No I have not heard the Indiandapolis version with Alan but would like to if anybody has it.

Let me state that I do not mind new modern country but Alan's voice on this song sounds like old style country from the 50's. For instance the Chattahoochee has more of a rock and roll country feel as Mac and Jimmy's version does. Make better sense?

There is no twang in a voice, its just good vocalizing, if your not liking Alan's voice because he's a country singer, thats ok! Just dont listen to country. Personally, I think Alans voice is better than Bubbas, and Bubba would most likely agree with me. Mac does a great job of singing it, but the melody was pitched for Alan, and he invented how to sing it, and then Jimmy comes in to add his Buffett style (notice how there is no elongation of "I", its Buffettized) Its just a good song written by some good writers, and sung by some good singers.

Hey thanx for the link!

I haven't heard the version with Mac yet, but I like Alan's version. Hopefully Jimmy will play it in Vegas, San Diego, or Irvine
We used to laugh at Grandpa when he'd head off and go fishing. But we wouldn't
be laughing that evening when he'd come back with some whore he picked up in
town.

Funny that this was brought up... As someone that is a big country fan, and a big (probably bigger) JB phan I find myself liking the version from both Camden and Merriweather a bit better...

It's nothing to do with twang or not for me.. it comes down to timing. I like the timing a bit better when Mac sings it; it seems a bit more natural to me.

That said, I don't dislike the other version. Now I also could be biased, as I was *at* the Merriweather show (and also recorded it off RM). So I have that show loaded up in my car CD player now... and gladly listen to the song on country radio (getting lots of airplay up here now) and then every now and then hit the concert version.

I also really like the versions of Mental Floss and it's my Job off the Camden show...

I also loved the Jimmy and Mac version at Merriweather, has anybody have a copy of it? I think any song live will beat the studio recording
