Debuting at #5 on Billboard's Top 200 album chart, 1994's Fruitcakes came out at a perfect time - after there had been no album since 1989's Off To See The Lizard. Lizard was a disappointment at first, with more keyboards and synths than guitars, but once I saw the show and heard them live, I started to listen differently, and over the years it has grown on me and when it comes to hearing Cheeseburger or That's My Story, I'll take the Lizard track anyday.
So after the live album and the box set and the short changed reissue Before The Beach plus the Margaritaville comp, the time was right - and ripe - for a Buffett record.
Fruitcakes restored my sanity when it came out. A fabulous record with hilarious artwork, every song on the record except Vampires is great to listen to. It certainly filled the void of not having any new Jimmy, and it set the tone for the next few albums. Where Fruitcakes was at its best, Barometer Soup was even better overall. Banana Wind was a rollercoaster - Cultural Infidel? What the hell is that? And then Math Suks on BHOTM? Even worse. So Jimmy still writes stupid songs.
Six String Music dips back in the ol' treasure chest; Love In The Library is simply excellent, while the title track and the LP opener are classic Buffett. The working title track, Quietly Making Noise, is a nice touch, while Lone Palm is the best song in eons. Frenchman For The Night is a nice flourish and Sunny Afternoon totally fits this record.
Perfect timing, good tunes, smart packaging and in Chicago anyway, a lot of airplay.

The Fruitcakes CD. It was the first Buffett CD I bought on the day it was released. To me that is always the difference of a casual fan and a true fan. I was 23 at the time and listened to Rock Music for years and needed a change without forcing it on myself. An older friend told me I had to go see the Jimmy Buffett show in 1993. I did and I got hooked on Jimmy's Music. When Fruitcakes came out, I was blown away by the music. It still to this day has a very special place in my heart. Every song I absolutely love. It is one of those CD's that I would want on a deserted island. It takes me back to a great time in my life when I had no responsibilities but was still responsible and it makes my heart sing to this day. Is there anything else needed in life? Fruitcakes was my favorite CD of the 90's. It made me into the Parrothead that I am today. They say this universe is bound to blow, well I say lets turn up the calypso control....apacalyps, apacalyps, apacalypso.

Now, granted, I'm a sucker for steel drums, but Quietly Making Noise is probably my most played song in years.

Sonically (is that a word?), Fruitcakes in my opinion has the best sound of any of Jimmy's CD's (although the MCA Gold Masterdisc of CILCIA sounds great, too). The music on that disc just jumps from the speakers. ...and "Frenchman For The Night" has a great groove to it -- wonderful for the wife and me to dance to together.

"Everybody's got a cousin in Miami" reminds me of that cuban boy Elian what's his face.
"Fruitcakes"is super other than Jimmy's corny soundng ranting & raving at the beginning of the song.
"Under my lone palm"is my favorite

This is my favorite record. I love Quietly Making Noise and Love in the Library. Delany is also great and I do have a daughter. The song that reminds me of my daughter is Little Miss Magic but it's not on Fruitcakes.

I like Delaney and Little Miss Magic but nothing tops Something So Feminine About A Mandolin.

Mandolin is a good song, but I don't think about my daughter when I hear it. It is a sensually based song.

I was just thinking of the line:

"When I get older and I have a daughter..."
