Awesome CD. Love the cover version of Uncle Johns Band. Lone Palm and Delaney are my two favorites. My wife is expecting in May and if it's a girl, Delaney will be her middle name.

"Everybody's got a cousin in Miami" reminds me of that cuban boy Elian what's his face.
"Fruitcakes"is super other than Jimmy's corny soundng ranting & raving at the beginning of the song.
"Under my lone palm"is my favorite
4 out of 5 stars****

OK, not considering the comp. cd's, this has gotta be my favorite Buffett CD. Great mixture of insanity and paradise dreams...especially like "Six String Music" and "Frenchman for the Night." This CD epitomizes what I think Buffett has become...great entertainment!

During the Beaches, Bars, Boats and Ballards tour,
Jimmy said he had just completed 2 new songs and wanted to get our feedback. He played "Everybody's got......." and "Quietly Making Noise". The applause was deafening. It was exciting to hear songs that no one knew by heart!

High points:
1) Has great songs like Everyone's Got a Cousin in Miami, Fruitcakes, and Vampires Mummies and the Holy Ghost.
2) Has fairly good songs like Lone Palm and Apocalypso
3) The studio recording quality is really good.
4) Lots of steel drums!
Low points:
1) The goofy album artwork looks like it was designed by a 10 year old girl (and seems inappropriate for a Buffett album).
2) The rest of the songs on the album aren't very good, and some have really awful choruses (Uncle John's Band, Delaney Talks to Statues).

Sorry, Mike, too -- agree with GA, plus I think the 'goofy album artwork' is great -- only problem is if you're pulling the little booklet out too much, the cutouts start pulling out.
But absolutely agree about 'Cousin in Miami', 'Fruitcakes' & 'Vampires, Mummies & the Holy Ghost'. (Check other posts for my recovering Catholic background.) But please don't forget 'Frenchman for the Night' and 'Love in the Library'.

I have to add my pitch for Uncle John's Band. You see, long before I was a Buffett PHinatic, I was a Deadhead. I am sure that Jerry Garcia smiles down from heaven when he hears a tribute to his great music. Personally, I feel that it is only a person like Buffett who can do His music justice....PEACE

Mike: appreciate your opinion, but, I got see him perform 'Uncle John's Band' live the summer after Jerry died. wow. 'nuff said. I'm glad I have that one. What about 'Quietly Making Noise'? and, please give some mention to '6 String Music', love that one, too! ^^'s up!!

I agree with GaBuffettFan...I like all these songs, but "Delaney" really talks to me too in a big way. I have 2 little girls, and there's a lot of lines in that song that I can really relate to..especially when Jimmy sings "She's growin' up way too fast, and asking lots of questions...some I know the answers to and some I'm looking for suggestions." Great line.
By the way...I also do a pretty bad handstand.

After nearly 5 years without a major album of new material, along came the highest charting album of Jimmy's career. If phans were afraid that his musical career had come to a close with the dawn of the '90's, then Fruitcakes was like a phoenix rising from the ashes.
Gone are the songs of drugs, drunkeness, and infidelity. Jimmy seems to take another road with this flavorful disc. With themes on romance, fatherhood, and therapy Fruitcakes goes in a direction that Jimmy hasn't traveled since the release of Coconut Telegraph.
"Everybody's Got a Cousin in Miami", "Quietly Makin' Noise", "Apocalypso", and the title track are like zesty caribbean cuisine for the ears. Jimmy brings new life to some good oldies like "Uncle John's Band", "She's Got You", and the Kink's hit "Sunny Afternoon".
The love he has for his family really shows in "Six String Music" and "Delaney Talks to Statues" and he manages to prove that you can laugh at yourself in the song "Vampires, Mummies, and the Holy Ghost". He has always managed to keep the door to his private life open just enough to let you know that he's having problems with various things and "Vamps, Mumms, and the Holy Ghost" is no exception--how many performers will be open about seeing a therapist?
There is a kind of peace, tranquility, and security in "Frenchman for the Night" that makes you feel warm and fuzzy all over. There is one song on this collection that reminds you of the days when A1A was the new album and that song is "Lone Palm", the only song on the disc that was penned entirely by Jimmy.
Fruitcakes isn't the only new music Jimmy unleashed on parrotheads in 1994; other songs that he recorded are "Mr. Spaceman", (from Kermit Unpigged) and "Mack the Knife", with Frank Sinatra on the Duets II cd. Both songs are worth seeking out.
Another song that came out in the early 90's is "If I'm Gonna Eat Somebody (It Might as Well be You)", written by Jimmy Buffett and Mike Utley. It appears in Ferngully and is sung by rap singer Tone-Loc. A better choice would've been having Jimmy's pan-man, Robert Greenidge, sing the song for the movie, because with Tone-Loc on vocals the song really suffers.
score--Fruitcakes: 5 1/2 coronas out of 5
score--Mr. Spaceman: 5 coronas out of 5
score--Mack the Knife: 4 1/2 coronas out of 5
score--Ferngully song: 2 coronas out of 5 (and that's being generous

After several sessions, this album has finally grown on me. It goes without saying that "...cousin in Miami" is a great tune, but currently I am hooked on "Frenchmen for the night". I have also found myself hitting repeat on "Vampires..." I do not like Jimmy's version of Uncle John's band (maybe I need to hear it live)or "Love in a Library". Thankfully, they are in sequence, so I can just hit fast forward twice and enjoy the rest of the album. Overall, I am really starting to get into this album. I am sure most of you seasoned parrot heads will disagree, but I still think "Beach House on the Moon" is much better.

"That's my story, and I'm sticking to it". Song for song, I feel BHOTM is far superior. Listen to it again a few more times if you are unconvinced. Have a few coronas while you spin the disc, if that will help.

Here is why I think BHOTM is better than Fruitcakes. I have paired similar songs against each other, and picked the one I think is better. Might be confusing. For example, I like BHOTM beter than Delaney...
BHOTM > Delaney..
Frenchman > Permanent reminder
Next Explosion > Quietly making noise
Pacing the cage > Lone Palm (yes I am serious)
Jogging > She got you
Flesh and Bone > Sunny afternoon
Cousin in Miami > Don't know don't care
Math sucks (equal) Vampires
Spending money > Uncle John's Band (studio version at least)
Semi-true story > Love in a library
Lucky stars > six string music
Fruitcakes > gumbo
Oysters and Pearls > apocolypso
final score
BHOTM 8
Fruitcakes 3
Sorry, but I am on a mission to convert nonbeleivers.
