Remittance Man
A man of empty pockets
From jingling his change
The idleness and grieving
Are all that he retains
By the harbor lights of Sydney
Or the Bora Bora moon
He recites his sad confession
To the seagulls and the loons

If you want to get the whole "definition" of what a remittance man really is, you can find it in none other than Mr. Twain's
Following the Equator. Is anyone surprised? I think not.

I've tried more than twice to read that book. I so respect anyone who finished it, just couldn't do it maybe while I'm on the shelf this winter

I can see how you'd struggle with the book. It really drags in parts. Basically, most of India is a drag, and the part in South Africa stunk. But, there were parts in that book that were hysterical and worth the fight.
That reminds me...my mother's had that book for like 2 years and I need to pick it up again.

I think my issue is he slowness, And the way the native people were spoken of, I know at the time that was common. but...
And before we start a PC. slinging contest I use the word, and I am the
LEAST PC person you will find. I mean what is right is right and all
but It does irk me. but like I said I'm looking at some time at home
this winter (lots) so I'll try again

Press on, oh diehards . . . the year was 1896 when Twain's travels took place and full-blown Victorianism prevailed, with little of the PC attitude known (almost ridiculously so!) by our generation.
It isn't the pace that matters when you are open to his moral messages somehow.

The pace of the book was a wee bit choppy...there were pages that I just plain skipped. But he has SUCH a way of turning a phrase! I loved how he desribed dolphins (at play) as "kittens of the sea."
