Jimmy doing Jimi?

"The Wind Cries Mary" - I expected "Lawyers, Guns and Money" to be the closer, I never could have imagined that he would try to play a Hendrix song. What in the world was he thinking? This is the strangest song I have ever seen on his setlist, and frankly I don't think it's a proper fit.

BTW - Today is the anniversary of Jimi's death, so I don't understand why he would play a Hendrix song two nights ago.

Haven't heard the version (looking forward to buying the CD's), but I'm really excited about hearing Buffett's cover. I'm not sure you have to time the date of the concert right on the anniversary to show respect, or whether the anniversary had anything to do with him playing it (maybe he's just adding it to the rotation). I will say after looking over the setlist (and being disappointed that "Wino and I Know" wasn't on there (this better be on one of the 6!), I was happy to see something I've never heard him do.

I agree. Wouldn't mind hearing it but not as a closer.

I think its great he did the cover. Here are the lyrics...I think it fits...go Bubba go:

"And after all the Jacks are in their boxes,
And the clowns have all gone to bed.
You can hear the happiness staggering on downstream,
Footprints dressed in red.
And the wind whispers Mary.
A broom is drearily sweeping,
Up the broken pieces of yesterday's life.
Somewhere a Queen is weepin',
Somewhere a King has no wife.
And the wind cries Mary.
Mary.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
The traffic lights they turn blue tomorrow,
And shine their emptiness down on my bed,
Their tiny island sags on downstream,
'Cause the life that lived is dead.
And the wind screams Mary.
Now will that wind ever remember,
All those names it has blown in the past.
Now with its crutch, its old age and its wisdom,
It whispers "No, this will be the last".
And the wind screams Mary.
Mary.
Mary."

A big surprise indeed. I sure don't associate Jimmy with Jimi, but if he is gonna play one, I guess Wind Cries Mary is one of his breezier tunes. I was at White River and enjoyed Jimmy's version. The rhythm was more flowing and toe tapping than I recall Hendrix's version being. There wasn't a lot of lead guitar, but I don't recall how much trademark Jimi guitarotechnics Hendrix used. Hendrix grew up in nearby Seattle so maybe that was the reason for the selection.

I would have preferred a Zevon tune too, and Jimmy must be a fan of his as they have similar clever wordplay writing styles. Bob Dylan gave us three Zevon tunes last year in Seattle: Boom Boom Mancini, Accidently Like A Martyr and (?). Warren must have a nautical tune, can't think of one off hand.

The Wind Cries Mary

After all the jacks are in their boxes
And the clowns have all gone to bed
You can hear happiness staggering on down the street
Footsteps dressed in red
And the wind whispers Mary

A broom is drearily sweeping
Up the broken pieces of yesterday's life
Somewhere a queen is weeping
Somewhere a king has no wife
And the wind cries Mary

The traffic lights turn blue tomorrow
And shine the emptyness down on my bed
The tiny island sags downstream
Cause the life that lived is dead
And the wind screams Mary

Will the wind ever remember
The names it has blown in the past
With its crutch, its old age, and its wisdom
It whispers no, this will be the last
And the wind cries Mary

From my not so perfect memory, I recall DJ Jonathon Brandmeier calling Jimi Hendrix father a couple times a year, and he lived in the Seattle area. Is that where Jimi is from? Is that the possible connection?

Whatever the reasoning, the man can do what he wants, and I applaud him for trying new things.

Jimi Hendrix was from the Seattle area, his grave is nearby in Renton, WA. I would guess that is why he would do it in Seattle and not Vancouver, two nights later. Of course, he may do it again in Vancouver tonight.
