I guess we will keep the debate going... what about the fines?

Pedro - $50,000. I guess this can be justified. He was intentionally throwing at a player. If your going to bean someone drill them in the a$$ or the thigh. Pitch was way too close to the head.

Manny - $25,000. Doesn't make sense to me. He acted like an a$$, yes and he confronted Roger but other than that not sure what the $25,000 fine is for????

Garcia - $10,000. Also doesn't make sense. What is he being fined for? He confronted Pedro and I think his reaction was justified. His hard slide into second was good baseball and since his actions in the bullpen will be dealt with seperatly not sure what he is being fined for????

Zimmer - $5,000. I realize these fines are put into perspective as to what the individual makes, but Zimmer should have been fined more as well as ejected. $50,000 for Pedro and $5,000 for Zimmer is too much of a discrepancy. Apparently the perception of being a loveable old man is worth something in this league.

It is no longer an outrage when a player or coach behaves like a maniac...it has become the norm....and we actually expect it. That alone is a very sad statement for the game of baseball.
Yes, Kitty you are right, but a lot of the fire and feury in the BOS/NY series comes from both of those clubs being full of arrogant morons with over-inflated egos... here's what happens in the CHI/FL series yesterday when Beckett pitches a little too close to Sammy's head...

Pudge Rodriguez, a totally admirable guy, does his best to assure Sammy that everything's cool... I'm not down on baseball, but this BOS/NY series is bringing other people down on it... Good thing there's another series going on still...the high road is over here in Chicago and Florida! So therefore, I'm with Z... :D

ya Chicago and Florida is an admirable series. It features a jiuced up Sammy Sosa who says he'll be first in line to take a drug test and when he get's called out on it and gets p*** off and declines to take the test. Also something about a corked bat . Please. Athletes are athletes are athletes whether they are in Chicago Boston or NY.

Hey- I don't want to get into a big argument here, especially in this thread since it's not about CHI/FL here, but the accusations have been made against Sammy, and he's faced them and most humbly, I might say. I'm not his biggest fan, but athletes on steroids are frequently hurt because their physical frame cannot withstand the massive muscle growth. Sammy's never hurt...well, besides that little toenail problem. My statement was that I'm glad I don't have to root for either of those teams in the NY/BOS series because they are making a mockery of themselves and their behavior is shameful. I'm glad I have a fun series to watch that's all about baseball...

Who couldn't feel sorry for Don Zimmer at his press conference yesterday?

I am no Yankee fan and him going after Pedro was stupid but I admire him for having the courage to admit that he was wrong and apologize.

You didn't see the two Yankee jerks Jeff Nelson and Karim Garcia apologizing for doing their tap dance with their cleats on to the Boston groundskeeper. I mean the guy was stupid to wave a rally flag in the Yankee bullpen but should he be beaten for it?

I wish the coaches could focus on teaching the 'athletes' how to apologize and how to admit that they were wrong. It makes those Budweiser locker-room commercials with Terrel Owens ( I know it isn't him but you know where they got the inspiration) more and more the reality.

agreed. I actually did feel sorry for him too at the press conference. At least someone is taking responsibility for their actions.

I was surprised about Garcia too. . I thought he was fined for punching the ex-groundskeeper in the bullpen. . but then thought. . Why isn't Jeff Nelson being fined?? :-?

On a side note. . losing respect for Nellie. He was quoted right after the incident . ."No. . No one got hit." Then as the story comes out. . he was the one to throw the first punch. .provoked or not.

forget what I said for feeling bad about Zimmer in the press conference. Apparently he didn't mean any of it. There is some great quotes in this.

http://www.espn.go.com/page2/s/caple/031013.html

"I said I'm sorry, but the only thing I'm sorry about is that I didn't knock that skinny little SOB's butt clear into the Charles River. And I would have done it, too, if he hadn't caught me off guard and tripped me. I was expecting him to put up his dukes and fight like a real man would do in that situation and instead he pulls some shifty little move you wouldn't expect from a 10-year-old girl or even Bill Lee"

Are you kidding me... Pedro caught him off guard. Dr. Evil you were charging him???? This is high comedy at it's best. You can't even make up stuff like this.

""Besides, where does that SOB get off thinking he can throw at a batter's head?"

I would love to ask him just 1 question. What was his reaction to Roger when he beaned Piazza in the head? Someone put the old man out of his misery.

Wow, just read the article on Zimmer. I really don't feel sorry for him now. Must have been a forced apology he had to make yesterday or somethin'.

"The day I can't take a cocky 160-pound Red Sox pitcher is the day I hang up my jockstrap"

Well hang up your jockstrap Don. Pedro tossed him to the ground like he was nothing.

Is that page 2 article a joke or is that true? Page 2 always has spoofs on their site. I really hope it is a joke if it isn't then I do not feel sorry for Zimmer any more.

As far as asking Zimmer about hitting Piazza, someone did about 2 years ago and Zimmer contended that Clemens DID NOT THROW at PIAZZA he said all Clemens was doing was throwing inside  and the pitch slipped. As I said, from the NY Yankees media to most of their fans, the players all the way up to the ownership are all hypocrites.

2 of the biggest Red Sox fans you will ever find are RT and me and we can at least say when our team is in the wrong!

As far as the bullpen stuff here is the actually police report filed by the two cops on bullpen detail. You tell me who is in the wrong?

The following is the text of the incident report filed by the Boston Police detective assigned to the Red Sox bullpen and the police officer assigned to the Yankees bullpen during Game 3 of the American League Championship Series Saturday night.

A member of the Fenway grounds crew, Paul Williams, 24, of New Hampshire, also assigned to the Yankees bullpen, and two Yankees players – reliever Jeff Nelson and right fielder Karim Garcia – got into a fight near the end of the game.

No charges have been filed yet against Nelson, 36, or Garcia, 27, even though this report indicates that the police officers involved intended to do so, characterizing the episode as assault and battery on Williams. It lists two New Hampshire men as witnesses to the fight.

The report says that “hands, feet, and teeth” were used during the fight. It describes Nelson as 6’2” tall, 210 pounds, and “muscular,” and quotes him as saying to Williams, “If you’re gonna cheer, go on the other side (or words to that effect).” It describes Garcia as 200 pounds and also “muscular.”

The report was filed at 9:40 p.m. Saturday, 2½ hours after the altercation.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While performing a paid detail at Fenway Park, Det. William Dunn, assigned to the Red Sox bullpen, and Officer Michael Pankievich assigned to the Yankees bullpen. Approximately 7:10 p.m., between the top and the bottom of the 9th inning, while standing outside of the bullpens and facing the crowd (and also bullpen occupants), Det. Dunn and Officer Pankievich observed a pitcher (Jeff Nelson) from the Yankees, approach the victim (who was standing in the corner of the bullpen). At this time (what appeared to be) a verbal confrontation ensued between the victim and Jeff Nelson. Officer Pankievich proceeded to that location in an attempt to separate the parties. While enroute, Jeff Nelson was observed pushing/grabbing the victim in the chest area at which time both parties fell to the ground where Jeff Nelson began punching and flaring his legs at the victim. At that point numerous other members of the Yankees bullpen jumped on the victim (some striking the victim and others attempting to break up the melee). The right fielder (Karim Garcia) from the Yankees was then observed jumping the right field wall, into the bullpen and begin striking down at the victim with his left hand. With the aid of other officers and Red Sox security staff, the parties were separated ending the incident. Further investigation revealed victim sustained numerous injuries, transported to Beth Israel Hospital and treated for injuries to his head, mouth and body (including what appeared to be numerous cleat marks). D899 Dets. Tierney and Gill responded to the Beth Israel Hospital where they further interviewed the victim and photographed his injuries. Lt. Kelly McCormick of Area B-3 forwarded witness information to Det. Dunn and P.O. Pankievich regarding their eyewitness account of the incident where they stated they observed member(s) of the NY Yankees baseball team initiate an unprovoked attack upon the victim. Summonses to be sought in Roxbury District Court for assault and battery on both Jeff Nelson and Karim Garcia of the Yankees baseball organization.
