Well, I know he's interested in astronomy (he has several telescopes) and has taught himself celestial navigation. He's also said that he believes planets must have some impact on us on earth and he references the way a full moon seems to effect a hospital's ER. No NASA links, as far as I know....

You know, after reading some of these posts it is kind of scary. I can just Imagine Jimmy reading this site and saying "wow, these guys/girls know more about me than I do".
I just think it's kind of interesting the amount of info we actually know about Jimmy.

I'm a space nut, have been to a two week teacher space program in Alabama, spent 3 school vacations at Kennedy Space Center, and have presented at a International Space Station Education Conference in Houston (hope to again this year too). I've taught at a student space camp during the summer for 5 years. I'm on a team to bring a Challenger Center to the city I teach in. We are in the stage of finding funding, grants, partners, etc. Jokingly I said, I'll write to Jimmy Buffett who loves space as much as all of us do and ask him to do a benefit concert to raise money for the Challenger Center! Others thought it was a GREAT idea. Now what do I do????? Where would I write? Do you think it could ever be possible? He has done Montesorri benefit concerts.
"I just want to live happily ever after, every now and then."
A favorite "space" verse of mine from a Buffett song is from "Somewhere Over China"..."How I would love to drive the shuttle, just to feel the engines roar, and to operate the levers that control the payload doors. I could buzz the Himalayahs, barrel roll above Hong Kong, set her down in San Francisco to the clangin' of the gong"!!!
Jimmy has often visited the Johnson Space Center here in Houston when he does shows here. Often there are astronauts at the shows, usually "up front"... I believe his music has been flown on the shuttle by at least 1 parrot heat astronaut. I am sure Jimmy counts numerous astronauts among his friends.

Like he says on the intro to "Everlasting Moon" from the box set, it's a baby boomer thing. Although I'm not quite the same age as Buffett and don't really consider myself a boomer, I can see where he's coming from. As a child growing up in the late 60s and early 70s space exploration was the future and it loomed large back then, from candy bars to Twang to the toys we played with (anyone remember Major Matt Mason?) to the books we read and the television shows we watched (Star Trek, Lost In Space, etc.). This was a time when classes stopped so a television could be brought into the room so we could see man walk on the moon for the first time. By this time we were supposed to of colonized the moon. To quote Bubba, "it's kinda funny how it all turned out..."

"..they soared through the Milky Way, counting the stars..once around Venus twice around Mars.."
The cool thing is, this has a double meaning. Venus, Mars and Moon were the names of sailboats of the same design that frequented anchorages in the Caribbean back in the 70's. Magnus and Mishka (sp?) were two boys who lived aboard the boats. If I remember correctly, Mishka was "Mr. Moon," since he lived aboard the S/V Moon. When Jimmy sings "once around Venus, twice around Mars," he's talking about the kids paddling around the boats in their dinghies. I heard the story from Magnus' father, but if I remember correctly, I think Jimmy mentions it in A Pirate Looks at Fifty.
