Island Books

Post by conched »

Along the line of Island Movies...Island Books.
I know a lot of you were involved with the cookbook and would probably enjoy a book called

A TRIP TO THE BEACH by Robert and Melinda Blanchard

<<<On a vacation with the family in Barbados, Mel and Bob Blanchard (of the Vermont-based Blanchard & Blanchard specialty foods company) stumble upon a tiny restaurant/shack on a Caribbean beach:

I marveled at the ingenuity of the set-up. A secluded spot, sand like flour, customers arriving in bathing suits. The guy barely lifted a finger, cleared at least $35.00, and gave us a lunch we'd remember forever.... The man had sold us a frame of mind.
So begins the Blanchards' 10-year pursuit of the illusory notion of "island time." In a literary heartbeat, they abandon the "concrete jungle" that was Vermont and open a restaurant on a little-known island in the British West Indies called Anguilla ("rhymes with vanilla").>>>

Wher is Joe Merchant? has always been a re-readable favorite. Following the Equator I've also read a few times. To Have and Have Not
Some times I feel like a propeller, spin, spin outtta control. I don't who is up on the throttle, boy I wish they would let it go....

Islomania by Thurston Clarke is a great non-fiction work. It delves into the mysterious obsessions certain people have with islands as well as detailing some excellent information on the current status of some islands and cultures that are being negatively affected by the outside world.
Cause I like Cajun Martinis and playin' afternoon golf.

The locale isn't right, but you can't beat "The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove" by Christopher Moore. This guy is definitely a kindred spirit!!

and the title HAS to be one of the top ten book titles of all time...

Don't Stop The Carnival is great. When you are done you can listen to Buffett's disc with greater appreciation.
