Pete Rose admits betting on Baseball

Pete Rose admitted today that he did bet on baseball when he was the manager of the Reds. He says in his soon-to-be released autobiography that he hopes the acknowledgment will lift the ban from MLB.

I imagine this will get the all-time hits leader reinstated... I hope so

Pete Rose is (was) a class A as****e. I never liked him, but it doesn't matter... so are lots of other players who are already in the Hall. He deserves to be there. His problems with his family are his own.

As a die hard Red's fan, I'm waiting for the day that "Charlie Hustle" is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. What he did was wrong, but it was while he was a manager. He should be inducted as a player, which was not at all effected by gambling. Should he be a manager again.......I don't know.

BTW, I said that he admitted on betting today. The story I read said that he actually admitted to Selig back in November of 2002 at a meeting. He repeated his admission on an interview with ABC News' Primetime Thursday which parts of it were aired on Good Morning America today.

I hated him as a Cub fan kid....threw plastic roses at him from the RF bleachers and Wrigley and got excused from the game.

I hated him even more after I met him as a minor league baseball operator in the Reds system. I do not care one way or the other about the Hall, but he should NEVER be allowed to manage again

Absofreakinlutely let him in, let him manage, hell let him play if he wants. It was 14 friggin years ago people!!! Let it go!! It completely ruined his life, do you really think he's gonna do it again??? I highly doubt it! If he does, take him out behind the stadium and shoot him.

I DONT LIKE BASEBALL BUT I THINK THE WHOLE ISSUE IS STUPID.THE HALL OF FAME SHOULD BE ABOUT YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS A PLAYER,NOT YOUR PERSONAL LIFE.THEY HAVE LET DRUG ADDICTS,ALCHOHOLICS AND OTHER LESS THAN DECENT PEOPLE IN THE HALL SO WHY PETE ROSE HAS BEEN MADE TO BE DIFFERENT I HAVE NO IDEA.
HE IS PROBABLY ADMITTING IT NOW JUST SO HE CAN GET IN,EVEN IF HE DIDN'T DO IT.MUCH LIKE THE WAY THE LEAGAL SYSTEM WORKS.ADMIT TO SOMETHING YOUR INNOCENT OF AND YOU GET IN LESS TROUBLE.
JUST MY 3 CENTS WORTH

You can let him in the hall but only if it is stated for the record in the hall what Rose did to tarnish the game. He should no way be allowed back in the game under any circumstances (manager, front office, league ambassador etc.) because he is not offering/has not offered an apology. He's just confirming the obvious so he can profit for himself!

he was a scumbag then (I've met him) and is a scumbag now. Put him in the Hall, but don't let him anywhere near a baseball field.

I was a huge Pete Rose fan (and this comes from a diehard Cubs fan) because of the way he played the game-nobody gave more effort to the fame than Pete. And i have always felt he belonged in the Hall of Fame, which should represent on the field accomplishments. I still believe he should be there.

But he should not be reinstated into baseball. And while the admission of gambling involves gambling many years ago, gambling can be an addiction, and one is never cured of an addiction.

I understand that he admitted this a year or so ago to Bud Selig, but it is disappointing that his public admission is timed to 1) benefit sales of his book and 2) take advantage of the fact that time is running out for him to get into the Hall of Fame. Makes me suspicious of his motives.

Another sad story for sports.

I was and still am a huge Pete Rose fan. He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame as much as anyone else. There are some peope already in the Hall of Fame that I feel have done worse things then Pete. If we are going to decide who gets in the hall based on peoples morals then there are some people who need to be taken out of the hall of fame. Just my 2 cents.

your right the Hall is filled with alcoholics, spousal abusers etc... the difference is Pete Rose disrespected the sport of baseball, the very sport that is trying to decide whether or not he should be inducted into their Hall. Having a gambling problem was his personal issue but as soon as he bet on baseball it became very public and for good reason.

Pete Rose please just go away!

I feel more disrespected by a player who puts up good numbers but at the same time is juiced up on roids. I won't get into how I feel about the whole owners vs. the players union saga.

I dunno, I think any player who whines about $$ is, in some ways, disrespecting the sport of baseball.

The hall is about his contributions as a player, not his faults as a human.

Thanks Lee, that is what I was trying to say

I wouldn't exactly put a player whining about his salary and a player/coach who bet on the game while coaching and then proceed to look people in the eyes and lie about it for 14 years in the same category.
His faults as a human disrespected the game that he wants to be praised for.

I respect Pete's abilities as a player - he earned a spot in the HOF.

I don't think his actions tarnished the game of baseball... only his own image.

I don't think his gambling changed the outcomes of any games.

And I don't think that if he somehow had an "insider's edge" on the bets he placed, it's not like he took any money out of the hands of innocent victims - merely scumbags who earn livings off of the hapless saps (no offense to any BNers with gambling addictions) in the world who can't ignore the lure and possibility of easy money.

It would be a crime to baseball not to let him in the Hall of Fame, and some good PR for Bud Selig (he needs all the good press he can get, especially with the way his daughter has screwed up his team). Personally I think that should be the extent of his "parole", I don't see how you could let him back into the league in any role.

However, guys have done worse (Daryl Strawberry) and recieved far less punishment.

so disrespecting a game(and remember,it IS only a game) is worse than being a drunk, drug addict or beating your wife? :-? :-?
