Which CD-Rs are best for Audio Recording?

Hoping I get cd burning capabilities soon, are there good and bad CDR's for audio recording, or are they all pretty similar? I know I see ads for Office Max type stores where you pay $10, and get a $10 rebate, so they're free... are those junk?

I'd hope to get quality stuff to pass along for either concert trading, or if I send B&P.

Basically, any guidance on brands to look for and brands to avoid would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have found that Verbatim seem to work very good, also I have had good luck with Maxell

I have an audio component CD recorder (RCA) that is kinda picky about what discs it will accept, but Maxell and Sony audio ones work every time. Memorex audio used to work, but now that they are manufactured to be "faster" it doesn't like those.

My computer however is not fussy and even cheapo CD-Rs seem to be fine in its burner.

I have not had problems with Sony, TDK or Maxel, I did buy a 100 pack of "PNY" and I did make a few coasters using that batch, but I dropped the speed of the burn to X32 and they worked....... may have just picked up the wrong speed CD-R's.

I've been asking around since using up my last batch of Memorex CD-R's. I haven't had trouble playing them on my home/car CD players but alot of friends that I made discs for couldn't get them to work.

Sony and Maxell have been the two brands with the most positive comments. They're a little more expensive but I found a good deal for them at CostCo, one of the warehouse clubs. Thanks for starting this thread!

As far as speed, X32 seems to work best on multiple CD players.

Just as a heads up here, keep a look out for ads by Staples...

I got spindles of 50 Sony 80 minute CD-Rs for $10.00 that had a $5.00 rebate so the final coast was only 10¢ each!!

btw... the Sony Audio discs were priced the same, but those spindles were only 30 count, so they ended up costing ~17¢ each.

Thanks! That is definitely better than the deal at CostCo.

I want to add that I have had NO problems with the Fuji and TDK discs either!

Stick with the name brands like Fuji, Tdk, Etc.
I have a dvd/cd burner and I can tell you that the quality of the CD-R does make a difference on what it is played in. Older cd players will not recognize the cheap brands. I had a problem in my car with a pioneer deck that would not play PNY's at all neither my bose radio in my kitchen.
As for DVD's stil with the name brand also. I made alot of expensive $4.00 coasters last year with the Memorex DVD+R's crapping out on me in mid burn. Stick with the name brand and you should be fine.

I like Fuji and Sony disc, I've been told to make sure that they are made in Japan, as the cheaper disc have thinner protective coatings and will not last as long. a lot of people I trade with use TY disc, which make and lable 'some' of the Fujis, not sure what the whole name for TY is.

99% of the people that are serious about audio recording would say your best bets are Taiyo Yuden and Mitsui - Taiyo Yuden's are sometimes used by TDK, Fuji and Sony. If you want to know that that is what you are getting, look for a 50 pack spindle that has the 'screw on' knob on the top like this:

Or look at the discs, the plastic near the center hole is a bit "greyish" not clear like most discs. Of course, you can always PM me with all your recording questions TB

One other thing - do not buy the discs that are labeled 'Audio' They cost more because they are designed to be used in a stand alone stereo component burner and are not needed for a computer CD burner - they'll work, but you will be paying extra $ for no reason.
