What is a Jimmy Buffett concert?

Post by captainjoe »

I am constantly asked by my non parrothead friends, "What makes his shows so great?" I try to tell them that it is something that you can not fully explain, unless you have been to one. To me, it is as close to a religous expirence as I wish to attend. I am a Catholic after all. Who else can inspire such a fan base to dress up, get drunk (if thats your thing) and meet new people all in one day. In the years that I have been going to his shows in Chicago, I have met people from Canada, Michigan and Hawaii. There is something to be said in this day and age that 40,000 people can come together and have a good time and not have to worry about getting in a fight or worse yet, a mosh pit. I like to escape in my mind and think back to the days before and during the concert dates and just remember all the good times with my friends. I have since moved away from all my close friends and this is really the one time a year that we can all get together and have a great time. We never miss a chance to see him in concert. To me the concert is secondary. I really enjoy the people that go. In Chicago, the police are pretty laid back (things have changed since 1968) and they let the parrotheads tailgate. Nothing beats grabbing a twelve pack and wondering around and meeting all the phans. I have no idea how long this gypsie will travel, but I can only hope it is for a long time!

I think it really says something about the phans and JB, since you never see him on the tv or hear him on the radio with the exception of "It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere". You never see him on Cribs or Its good to be ..., and that speaks volumes to the millions of phans that keep this dream afloat. Although Margaritaville is not one of my favorites (Love in the Library is), I thank God that it inspired me to buy Songs you know by heart and then the rest of them. Thank you Jimmy! :D

Well Jimmy's concerts used to be "fight free" until someone started sneaking in 20year old girls in their RV

CaptainJoe: I gave up trying to 'xplain Jimmy years ago. What I do now is take people to the shows. Some "get it." Some don't.

My answer for the "Why do you follow this guy all over the place to see the same show several times in a season?" question:

It's the most fun you'll ever have -- legal.
