License to Yawn...
I hope Jimmy's success with 5:00 Somewhere and the equally unimaginative License to Chill aren't distracting him from the thoughtful and clever storytelling that has endeared him to Parrotheads over the years. Not that I hate either of these songs, mind you. They are catchy as hell and will probably win Jimmy a lot of new fans, but they lack the depth that Parrotheads have come to rely on. They both talk about escaping your job and your life to relax on the beach...blah, blah, blah. This is fine, but how many songs can you really write about that before people get tired of it? With most of Jimmy's songs, the escapism is implied and everybody understands that. Until this point, only Buffett imitators have found it necessary to perform such thin material because they lack Jimmy's creativity, credibility, and keen storytelling skill. Doing the duets is fine, but at this point in his career I think Jimmy has earned the right to make his “co-stars” step their game up to his level, rather than him having to sink to theirs.

Yeah it is quite funny that Jimmy doesn't really have a boss and says every show that he loves his job...oh wait, didn't Mac write the song?Unpopular Poet wrote: They both talk about escaping your job and your life to relax on the beach...blah, blah, blah.

Yeah.... we need to give him the benefit of the doubt. Wait till the new album comes out, then we'll see. You said it perfectly. While the material I heard doesn't require scuba gear, I'm willing to bet that we all will be smiling again come Summer.bananaman wrote:Yeah.... we need to give him the benefit of the doubt. Boomerang Ross wrote:So, does anyone know if every song on the album Jimmy is teamed up with another singer? If Teknowaffle is right that would be kind of disappointing. Don't get me wrong, I like Kenny and Alan on the record, but I want Jimmy and the Reefers. Not some colaboration album.
Don't know if every song has a guest artist but i will tell you that this album does not include the Coral Reefer Band with the exception of Mac and Doyle. So this album is exactly that, "a collaboration album".To me, that makes it dissapointing already!Sorry if i offend!

Well, I guess for that sums it up. That kind of stinks, because when I heard that Jimmy was going back to a country album I envisoned him going back to the A1A days. Then I heard about the guest stars and that was cool for maybe a song or two, but the whole record????
Don't get me wrong I'll be first in line, but let's hope today's corporated Nashville doesn't grab ahold of this album.

You said my exact fears. That corporate Nashville will eat up this album and forever change what it truly is i love about Buffett and his music.I hope this album tanks, i'm sorry for those of you that are looking forward to it but its albums like these that tend to really change an aritists direction. Why couldn't an album like Barometer Soup have gotten Jimmy awards postive feedback?I'll answer it myself because its a great indepth album with great musicians and writers that don't have an MTV or radio friendly image.

It shouldn’t be, as it was written for Alan for a new track on his second greatest hits package and Jimmy was the guest. License to Chill and all the songs that are going to be included on the album are the other way around. Let’s just hope all the radio DJs get it right and say Jimmy’s name first when referring to the tunes and give him the recognition and respect he deserves.Tiki Bar wrote:I wonder if he'll include 5 O'Clock on the LTC album?
He will probably return to the island sound next album. Do we even know that this album will be 100% country?

We've actually heard 2 songs off it now....he closed the Anaheim show with Anything, Anytime, Anyway and I think this will really appeal to parrotheads everywhere who appreciate Jimmy's ballads. If License to Chill is the worst song on the album....its still better than Math Sux or What if the Hokey Pokey is really what its all about.
