I'm of a mind that he's trying too hard to be another Jimmy Buffett and the thing about it is (and I hear this from people up Maynardville/Luttrell way) he will *always* be a redneck from Luttrell. That's not a negative thing, as Luttrell is a neat little country town, but he didn't grow up on the coast. He grew up in farm/moonshine country, and beautiful country it is.
His whole "seashell necklace" thing just smacks of somebody who spent one too many spring breaks in Panama City and suddenly decided that they were from the coast. I don't buy it. I love his concerts, and love his music. His greatest hits album has been in my Miata for over a year. He just needs to quit trying to out-Buffett Buffett.

sorry, I think I have to disagree there.....Kenny is a Parrothead, he's said it....I think it's more like he looks up to Jimmy....his music has always been what it is even in this new cd....the new cd actually has meanings to every song....Im pretty sure he's never forgotten where he comes from....mrmiata wrote:I'm of a mind that he's trying too hard to be another Jimmy Buffett and the thing about it is (and I hear this from people up Maynardville/Luttrell way) he will *always* be a redneck from Luttrell. maybe some of his style he learned from Jimmy..but is that really a bad thing......
I actually think he does a great job singing "Come Monday"
(just my opinion)

With all due respect to Tiki Bar.....
I just bought (at Target) the new Kenny cd/with the bonus track. If you don't think Kenny has anything but respect for Jimmy, listen to the beautiful job he does on "Come Monday" Buffett-esque...Buffett-influenced, damn straight and it is great. Wade you are right about "There Goes My Life" especially the refrigerator line.
God forbid, Jimmy is 57 and how many summers do we have of this "Parrothead Madness", Kenny just may be my heir-apparent for my summer concert fun.
And I saw Jimmy in the 70's, there was no show, Jimmy didn't move, he sang at a mic and sumtimes strummed the guitar, you are being a little hard on Kenny, he is light years ahead of where Jimmy was on stage after three or four albums

He ain't wrong he's just different

I just don't know that I'd wanna be the "next Jimmy Buffett." I'd rather be the "only Kenny Chesney."
Kenny's stuph used to be Kenny's stuph. Now it's trying too hard to be Jimmy's stuph, and that's where I get discouraged.
It doesn't change the fact that I really like Kenny. I've been to his shows, and know people that went to his shows when he was playing bars here in Knoxville. But he will never be Jimmy Buffett and he shouldn't try to be. Trying to be Jimmy only cheapens Kenny.
Analogy: Nobody has replaced James Dean. That's onacounta there was only one. Every "new James Dean" has been a pale shadow of the real thing.

I understand what you are saying, and I agree...im not sure he's trying to be the next Jimmy....it's just the music he likes, it's where he is in his life...at least that's how i've seen it since i've read the insert in the cd....mrmiata wrote:I just don't know that I'd wanna be the "next Jimmy Buffett." I think Jimmy is more of a mentor of Kenny's......

I think after reading this post, that there are quite a few Parrotheads that really like Kenny. The ones that don't may not be the majority, contrary to popular belief. mrmiata, I live in Knoxville myself, minutes from Kenny's hometown of Luttrell. I am a fan of country music and love musicians like Toby Keith, George Strait, and Garth Brooks. I enjoy all types of music, but my passion is Buffett's "beach" music. By stating that you don't think Kenny can live a Carribbean lifestyle and sing about because his roots are in Luttrell, you are saying that I can't live a Parrothead lifestyle in Knoxville, because it's not on the coast. I could not disagree more. Kenny does good stuff. I love country music and I love tropical music. To see a new guy out there blending the two together, I can't be happier. You know, Jimmy won't be around forever, and no one will ever replace Jimmy. But when he's gone, won't it be nice to have a few guys around carrying on his "style" and passing it to others? Kenny is the man, and I'm proud of him.

I work in Halls, literally minutes from Luttrell.
My issue is just that he seems to be trying too hard to *be* Jimmy. He needs to *be* Kenny. His music seems to have changed when people started calling him the "next Jimmy Buffett," not before. The only reason they seem to have said that originally was because he said "Now I know how Jimmy Buffett feels." It just doesn't work for me.
You can have the attitude but not the latitude. Look at St. Somewhere, also from Knoxville, who used to be all about the tropical music. Of course, they're more about "americana" music now, but for a long time they were *highly* sought after for their Buffettesque toonz.
I guess I just find the whole "suddenly I'm the next Jimmy Buffett" thing kinda disingenuous. I haven't heard the new album, but I'm sure I'll love it regardless. Yes, it's nice to have that sound carried on, but I'd hope it will be that sound with a unique nature to it that isn't just "the next Jimmy Buffett."

Ok, this sucks. I went to both of the Targets in Knoxville yesterday, and they didn't get a shipment of Kenny's new album with the Bonus CD. They just got the regular one like I already bought from Best Buy. The bonus CD can't be bought around here, and online prices are high. What would it take to get one of you guys that have it to burn me a copy and mail it to me. I'll send money your way or anything! I've got to have these songs!

I bought "When the Sun Goes Down" from Target too, and I'm glad I did. I also have his Greatest Hits from a few years back with Mac's "Back Where I Come From", as well as "No Shirt...", and I do think he sounds good.Cubbie Bear wrote:With all due respect to Tiki Bar.....

I confess I'm being too hard on Kenny for his showmanship, but I stand by it. All of his concert footage I've seen on CMT just doesn't seem natural, that's all. Although I didn't actually see Jimmy live "back in the day", I've still enjoyed any video footage I've seen of it. I don't need the elaborate stage design and dancers, but they don't distract me either. At this point, there's nothing I'd rather see then Jimmy and his guitar on a stage. On MiniMatineeI, I found Jimmy and co playing "Knees of My Heart" in the hotel room fascinating. I don't know what it is about him, but his stage presence grabs ahold of me and I can't take my eyes off him, no matter what "stage" it's on.
But Kenny on the other hand, makes me want to look away. He just doesn't seem like he's comfortable up there yet, and like he feels like he has to do something to entertain the crowd, which he shouldn't have to. But obviously without my support, he's doing just fine, and the formula he's using works for the masses.

Oh man, I forgot about the West Knoxville ones. I went to Broadway and Clinton Highway. I'm calling now....mrmiata wrote:Both? There are three Targets in Knoxville. Word of warning: I just bought this CD at the Target in Turkey Creek. They had several ads in the CD slots that said "Includes 5 exclusive songs, including Come Monday" or some crap like that. I grabbed the CD right in front of one of those signs, got home, opened the CD and there is *no* bonus CD. I'm mad as *hell.*
What songs are on the bonus CD? I'm going to look for them in other venues.
