I definately remember Frank "Hondo" Howard. As a Yankee fan, he KILLED us in the 1963 World Series when he was with the Dodgers.
The Dodgers won it in four consecutive games, with Hondo hitting TOWERING home runs in 2 of the first 3. In that 4th and final game, Whitey Ford pitched a 2-hitter for the Yankees. Frank Howard got BOTH of the hits, one of which, was, you guessed it, a home run. Mickey Mantle hit a home run for the Yankees in that game, and the final score was 2-1.
Sandy Koufax won the 1st and 4th games of that series, struck out 15 in the 1st game, and was named the series M.V.P. The Dodgers pitching staff (Koufax, Podres, and Drysdale) allowed the Yankees all of 4 runs in those four games. The Yankees pitchers did okay-allowing the Dodgers to score only a total of 12 runs in that series, but in the end, it was the Dodgers (thanks in large part to Howard and Koufax) who prevailed.

As for your Denny McLain question, he started out with the Tigers, where he spent the majority of his career, and played his last two years for the Washington Senators (the team that is now the Texas Rangers).

......Yep.I remember him well. I even have a few of his baseball cards. Going back to that Orioles team tho....not only did they have great pitching, but the rest of the team wasnt too shabby either. Ya know...I miss those days-thats when baseball was so much better than it is today..and my Buccos beat the birds in 71 series. (79 too) :D

McClain dead-ended with Oakland & Atlanta in '72, and, when you mention the Bucs, another pitcher who was great in that '71 Series was Steve Blass.
He also blew up in '72 ... couldn't even throw a strike.
I agree ... those years (especially when you were a 10-year old boy who lived for baseball) really seemed like the greatest.

Well I will tell you fellas I used to have an article on my fridge.
(girlfriend didn't like it) to para phrase Richard Ballard
I don't root for this years batch of overpaid "superstars"
I root for the team, I root for thr tradition, and for the memorys
of years past , and I root for the hope that this year will be OUR
year .
That said I am a Giants fan will always be and I know that you feel
the same about the Padres so we will just have to wait and see.
