'Appy Birt-dey, Rasta Mon!
I missed Bob Marley's birthday this week, but I'm sure somebody blew a spliff in his honor.
I'll just raise my glass tonight and say, "We miss you, Bob."
What is your favorite Marley memory or tune?
For me it's probably "Stir It Up"
The first time I heard it I didn't even know who he was. (Thought maybe he was from Brooklyn!)
I didn't have to listen to it twice before I knew that he was "sumtin speyshall"
Thanks, Bob.

Universal Music has recently announced that they have acquired the 1967 to 1972 recordings of Bob Marley & the Wailers with lots of unreleased stuff. Look for the first "new" release in the spring. I think I heard it will be 3 CDs. One Love, Ya'all!![/u]
I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now!

Regarding the Universal thing I recently posted an article about that somewhere in this section of the message board if anyone cares to look it up. Can't wait to hear those.
Out of curiosity, how many here own other Bob Marley albums besides Legend and what other reggae artists are you into? The reason I ask is that hilarious article The Onion ran awhile back about Legend being banned from college campuses. Plus, I run into a lot of people that only own Legend and/or seem to be oblivious to the fact that there are TONS of other artists that make reggae music that are equally deserving of the attention Bob Marley receives. I love Bob Marley, so please don't take this as being disrespectful towards him, it's just that there is so much more to reggae than Bob Marley himself. He was the first reggae artist I got into but falling in love with that music quickly led me to so many other artists such as Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, the Itals, the Pioneers, Toots and the Maytals (who are right up there with Bob Marley and the Wailers in my book for favorite reggae artist of all time), Jimmy Cliff, Culture, the Mighty Diamonds, Black Uhuru, Rita Marley, Lucky Dube, Marcia Griffiths, Alpha Blondy, Judy Mowatt, Third World, Black Slate, Ken Boothe, Gregory Issacs, and many, many more. I like some of Ziggy Marley's stuff but it is "bubblegum" reggae (remember Musical Youth?) compared to the real thing.

[quote="iuparrothead"]I don't even own Legend. Good point though Lance. I'd love to read that Onion article!
btw... my cat's name is Rasta

Cool, I didn't buy it myself until I started my CD collection. I still have lots of Marley on vinyl that I haven't picked up on CD.
BTW, who is "Lance"?
What about everyone else, is Legend the only Marley/reggae in your collection? I'm not picking on anybody, just wonderin'....

I didn't even see it...Very true indeed.Jahfin wrote:I'm guessing since no one answered my question about Legend that must be the only reggae album most of you own.
It's almost as bad as people who claim to be big Buffett fans and only own SYKBH.

Oh, I'm not really trying to single anybody out, I'm honestly just curious if Legend is the extent of everyone's reggae collection.NYCPORT wrote:I didn't even see it...Very true indeed.Jahfin wrote:I'm guessing since no one answered my question about Legend that must be the only reggae album most of you own.

You'd be amazed at the amount of people I've run into that think Bob Marley is the ONLY reggae artist there is, or worse yet, that he's the one that invented it. I love Bob Marley's music, but he's kinda like what the Beatles are to rock n' roll, "the gateway drug". There's SO much more to both genres than just those artists and I'm a huge fan of both, so that's not a slight towards either one.
