Places to Stay in the Big Easy

OH Lookie Here! I was just going to do a post about places to stay in New Orleans... when I found this new section!

I am heading to New Orleans for a wedding over Memorial Day weekend and the airfare is killing me. I'd love ideas for a fun, clean, fairly inexpensive place to stay.

Ideally, I'd rather not get a car, so somewhere near the French Quarter would be good. The wedding is on a Riverboat and some people are staying at the Wyndam on the water... but with all my other weddings this year, I need to find nice place for a bit less money.

I'll try hotels.com, expedia and the like, but would like some input from my BN connections!

My favorite place used to be LeRichelieu...don't even know if it's there anymore. Small, lovely hotel right on the edge of the quarter. *Sigh*

I remember being able to afford it on a college student's (non)income.

I have stayed at a few places and the cheapest was the Duruy Inn about 4 blocks from the French Quarter nice, clean friendly people. I like staying more inside the FQ but if your looking for less expense.

Anywhere IN the French Quarter is not cheap, but the web site: http://www.neworleansonline.com has the cheapest rates I've seen. I hope the wedding isn't anytime in the next two weeks...rooms are as scarce as hen's teeth from the middle of January until after Mardi Gras day. The Best Western French Quarter Landmark is cheap, but it's up near Rampart.....getting to the scary part of town. :o

Thanks for all your ideas. I found out it is the Food and Wine Festival that weekend too, so lots of wine for me!

I am looking into these suggestions! Are there areas I should avoid?? Sketchy??

I generally stay at Hotel Monoco when I'm in the Big Easy.

As a rule of thumb staying out of dark alleys and streets that aren't lighted or don't have crowds on them is a good idea. You are generally pretty safe on Canal, Bourbon, Decatuar at all hours. Some of the side streets between them can be iffy after dark.

The Garden District is pretty safe in terms of petty crimes although I would suggest using common sense even there.

I always enjoy the zoo, the aquarium, Jackson Square (breakfast at Cafe du Monde), Louis Armstrong Park. I have done the voodoo tour, the cemetery tour, the swamp tour, the bayou tour and the river tour north to see the big antebellium mansions. I really enjoyed the voodoo tour, especially since it was Halloween!

There are lots of wonderful places to eat, drink and have a grand time and then there's Margaritaville! :pirate: It's a wonderful place and the staff is great.

If I ever win the lottery, I figure I will move to New Orleans and become a fat ner'do well who enjoys life to it's fullest there.

Enjoy yourself.

I just booked the Days Inn on Canal for 69.00 a night. I stayed there the first time I visited N.O. with my parents when I was 15. I think they have reburbished and the pics look ok.
