I spent a week in Nantucket last August (right before the GW concert, which we went to afterwards). We rented a cottage in Sconset w/ my sister and her husband. There are some B&Bs in Town, but most vactioners rent. You can go to
www.nantucketrealestate.com to see what is available in all different sizes and price ranges. Another popular place to rent is Madaket, which has better beaches than Sconset and beautiful sunsets. Sconset has more charm though, so it depends on your priorities.
We didn't rent a car - there's a shuttle service which takes you all over the island and we found it to be useful an reliable.
Nantucket was absolutely beautiful and peaceful, we had a great time and I highly recommend it. It's really a special place.
As for getting there, there are 2 high speed ferries that go over from Hyannis. I forget what they're called, but they're pretty comparable in price, etc. You can also fly.

flying into the cape and taking the ferry is the best. It would even be cheaper to fly into boston or providence and rent a car to the ferry. I think its a bit pricey to take a car over. Flying from the cape to Nantucket is a bit pricey and in very small planes. Depends on how much $ you have and time.
