I live along the NC coast and if you're looking for characteristics of the big city you're simply not going to find them here. Personally, I'm glad there are no tall buildings or other things here that would be associated with the big city and I sincerely hope it stays that way.

Lee surrendered. Not everybody else. :P

Charleston is my one particular harbor. It's the only place in the world I'd pack my house again for. I tried Florida. I'm back in Tennessee. Grew up in Houston and would never go back to live. Charleston? I've been there about 40+ times in the past 14 years and I can honestly say it's the only place that I always want to go back to. I will live there before I die.

I'd suggest a trip to Savannah to see for yourself what it's like. It's probably my favorite city to visit.

We need to be south of Virginia (too cold) but north of Florida (been there, done that, don't wanna go back). We need to be on the coast or within a half hour of the coast and within' 20 minutes or so of a fairly large city.

We like Charleston, but have heard really good things about Savannah but have never been.... So... Whatta ya'll think?
Hey, what's wrong with Florida? Big cities here, Jimmy is here part of the time. Weather is usually nice most of the time.

Personally my vote is for Charleston.

Did I hear someone mention medical jobs? My brother(a doctor) more specifically did his residency there at MUSC (medical university of south carolina) Its an absolutely beautiful town, nice weather (ive been there in october when it was above 90!, ) people really couldn't be nicer, has its own Margaritaville, and isn't that far from Myrtle Beach.
He lived in a little town called Ladson. Feel free to pm me for any info.

I also have a best friend who lives near Savannah. Personally never heard anything that impressed me that much.

We'd looove to move down South someday. This damn weather here sucks. :D

I went to the StPattys day celebration in Savannah for 4 straight years. Best celebration period I have ever been to. Other than that I wouldn't live in that city if my salary tripled. My best buddy lived there for 4 years and hated it. He moves around because of his Construction field and was disgusted by it. I have spent time in Charleston and Savannah without any celebrations. If I ever move south again Charleston is the place for me. Just my 2 cents.

I've always called it the "Mardi Gras of Georgia". It gets absolutely nuts during that holiday.

Yup, plenty. But they have done a good job of revitalizing the downtown/historic areas along with a significant amount of the rest of the city.

Anyone who has spent a significant amount of time in either city can tell you, Charleston is the way to go. Real Charlestonians aren't interested in refighting the war, as some have suggested; we just want you to know that we may do things a little differently down here. However, the people of Charleston couldn't be lovelier. If you are interested in history, Savannah is a little heavier in reconstructions, where Charleston seems to have more of the original structures. It's an old rivalry (Charleston v. Savannah), and one that will likely draw out more than one strong opinion, but in my eyes there is no comparison. As I've traveled around the world, I've met people from Italy to Costa Rica who respond with awe when I tell them I'm from Charleston. No matter where I go, I will always be working my way back to the Low Country. Good luck, and I hope you are happy, whatever you decide to do.

Hey, Jacksonville has the beach, the tall buildings (at least TWO!)
and the river and ICW to boat all around in. It's Florida, but really
more like SE Georgia... only WITHOUT THE STATE INCOME TAX!

Hmmmm.... Okay, here's what I've learned...

Charleston seems to be the more favorable city. Unfortunately I was only able to spend one afternoon there last week and I must say (even though it was raining) I was impressed with the area. At this point, it is our first choice.

Savannah is also nice and should be given consideration. I think we will continue our plan to visit Savannah for a few days this summer or fall and see it for ourselves. If we don't move there we definately need to go down there for St. Patty's day!

Jacksonville also deserves a bit of consideration. My gf and I have had the opinion that florida is too touristy and when I lived outside of Daytona in high school I got tired of it and thought it was actually TOO hot in the summer.. But, Jacksonville seems to be atypical of my view of Florida. Maybe we can visit there too in conjunction with our Savannah trip!

Thanks for the advice dudes! You've all been very helpful! Feel free to keep the comments rolling. I plan to print out this thread and give it to the girlfriend. Every positive comment gets her closer to committing to do this before the end of 2004!!!

Hey Rick! We've also entertained the idea of Atlanta, but I really don't want to be that far from the coast... Would I like it there enough to not care that I'm 3 hours from the coast?

You can join us on Lake Lanier. Not the ocean but still plenty of water and boats, and just north of Atlanta.

3 GOOD hours... depends on how you drive AND Savannah (except Tybee Island) doesn't have that good of beaches. Now if you go down a little further like to Jekyll or St. Simon's Island THAT is the place ya wanna be! I personally like Atlanta because I am not too far from mountains or ocean. 5 hours you are on the Gulf Coast of Florida or about 3+ on the coast of Georgia!

Just my thoughts.

Intersting I found this thread today. I've been thinking of moving to FLA, but my wife doesn'e want to move that far from family in PA. Maybe Charleston is just the right compromise!
