Okay listen... I agree that you have to build the best team you can and I'm not one of those whiners screaming that this isn't fair... But good grief!Check this crap out!
Yanks might sign Maddux too now?
ESPNRadio here in the city is also saying that he is close to signing....

Unfortunately Steinbrenner has ruined the game for the sake of inflating his own ego. Much the way Charlie Finnley tried to manipulate the 70's Athletics.
Okay,,I cannot resist..no cheating..who was Finnley's liason in Oakland while he was "mostly" out of town??

this is good, right? Cuz if the Yanks keep abusing the broken system and keep snatching up all the good players because of their pile of money, baseball will HAVE to institute a salary cap, right? Right? Gawd, it would be nice to see the Brewers do well!

Not necessarily. MLB has tried to even the tables by instituting a luxury tax if you are over a certain amount on your payroll. This has not even made the Yankees or George blink. I heard that the amount the Yankees had to pay in Luxury tax last year, was somewhere in the range of $60 millionDrunkenIrish wrote:this is good, right? Agree, the strikes have taken phans to other sports, me included. For those who grew up with pinstripes and baggy uniforms have no taste for tight fitting polyester, diamond earrings and gold medallions that could knock a tooth out.Pencil Thin wrote:Not necessarily. To me, baseball salaries are and have been, just like the giant snowball heading down a steep hill. It keeps getting bigger and gathering more speed, but when it finally comes to a big nasty crash....(which will be soon)....it ain't gonna be pretty. Especially for the fans

A tax just makes money for the league, it does nothing to cap the spending for each team, it's just a penalty. It'll be simple, you can spend X amount of money on players. End of story. We've made it work for football, certainly we can save baseball.Pencil Thin wrote:Not necessarily. UPDATE: The latest report is that Greg Maddux has denied that the Yankees are one of the teams he is interested in. It is believed that it was just a rumor with little or no truth to it... But, who the hell knows... It is the Yankees! I'm surprised they haven't signed a Babe Ruth clone that no one knows about to a multi-year contract....
