You will be close to everything! My advice is to take the subway everywhere you can. Asking a cop might be your best bet. Don't plan on seeing Jimmy. Watch out for the Monkey King!!!! :pirate:

Delboy - What hotel are you staying at? Midtown is nice. If you are on the East side - you are close to Park Avenue (great for window shopping!)the Lexington Subway line - which is clean and Easy. Get an all day Fun Pass Metro card and you can ride the subway as many times as you want all day - and it's just $7.

Get a Map!!! :D Barnes & Noble has the small laminated maps that have all the attractions highlighted and you won't be standing on a corner with a huge unfolded map looking lost!

What attractions do you want to see? This is a bit touristy - but you will see a lot. The double decker bus tours run about 3 to 4 hours - and I think you can get off at any of the attractions and wait for the next one to come by.

If you want to see a show - go to Duffy Square - it's on a center island of 47th St between Broadway and 7th avenue. They sell the unsold tickets the day of the show at 50% off the price. You need to get there early - as the line can get long - but even the off-broadway shows are good. .and you save money.

If you are in the Theatre district. Eat at Carmines. You will need to make a reservation - because it gets crowded - but it's great food and not too expensive. (Family style - 1 dish would feed 2). So good!!

If you go to any of the NYC websites. . nycvisit.com or nyctourist.com - they have a calendar of events that are going in NY and nearby areas.

I didn't see Jimmy listed in March! :D

Have a Great Trip.

Delboy,

All of Karin's suggestions are great!

Here is another site, for the NYC subways:
http://www.mta.info/nyct/subway/index.html

The NYC site that Karin listed might have that, but just in case.

Would you like to go to a TV show taping? Are you familiar with David Letterman? He has a late night talk show, but it is taped in the afternoon, close to where you are staying.

I don't know how old you are - do you have kids? There's a great book I have at home for visiting NYC with kids. If you want I'll get you the exact name. I don't have kids; I bought it because it has a list of places in NYC that have public bathrooms! You might want it for the same reason!

I agree. If you are going with someone, and don't care that you have to sit together at the show... get singles. I've had amazing seats when we split up (can't really talk during the show anyway) for a really good price.

You are centrally located to everything, but definetly put a plan together. Carmine's is one of my favorite restaurants, just show up early 4 or 5 in the afternoon and expect to wait for a table, they only take reservations for 6 or more people. Buy one those travel guides at a book store, it'll give you a better idea of "off" times to hit major attractions. If you are an action/ adventure person hail any cab and they will give the ride of a lifetime!! Real white knucklers!!

One of the coolest things you can do here is to take a boat trip around the city. Check this site out ---> NYWaterway

The trips are fairly inexpensive with very knowledgable guides. If the weather is nice on the day you go you will absolutely love it!!

Go here ---> http://www.nywaterway.com/tickets_sightsee.html and select the 2-hour Full Manhattan tour. That's the one I did.

And by the way... As far as I know, I'm the only BNer that lives in Manhattan so if there's anything I can do for you or if ya wanna arrange to grab a beer or 10, just PM me....

(And don't be scared.. I'm not as weird as everyone thinks.  )

I did that trip as a dinner cruise years ago and it was the most beautiful view of the city one can have. Other than the kids standing on the bridges throwing things down at us it was very relaxing. Ever experience that?

No, NYCParrothead, you're not the only BNer who lives in Manhattan!! Although there are definitely too few of us.

Delboy, you might also want to check out www.newyork.citysearch.com.

For me, the best part about Manhattan is just walking around the city and absorbing the atmosphere. Spend a nice day in Central Park, another day in the Village. Spend some time in the downtown/Tribeca area. Spend some time in the Upper West Side. The Natural History Museum is fabulous.

New York is (for some) shockingly expensive, but there are some deals to be had. The best is pizza. NY has the world's best pizza. My favorite place is Arturo's on West Houston in the Village - $30 gets you a fantastic pizza and some beers. The other great NY deal is bagels--UNQUESTIONABLY the world's best bagels. I'd argue that the best of the best are from Ess-a-Bagel. $5 will get you a great bagel meal.

Another great thing to do, if you're into it, is listen to jazz. I'd suggest Village Vanguard in the Viillage or Birdland in midtown. The Iridium in midtown is also good but a little pricey and touristy. Most jazz shows have a $20-$30 cover w/ a 2 drink minimum.

One of my favorite restaurants is Rosa Mexicana's. It's upscale Mexican with fabulous margaritas and guacamole. Can be pricey, but also has a fun atmosphere. There's one near Lincoln Center and one on 1st Ave/58th.

I second NYCParrothead's suggestion to do a boat tour around the city. The downtown views are great. I go sailing in the harbor in the summertime, and it's breathtaking.

You will be staying in the heart of the city. NY is safe these days, but you always have to watch out. You will mostly encounter other tourists and business folks in Midtown.

Enjoy!! :D :) :D
