RELOCATING to Florida!!!!

Post by stlrman »

I'm a Pennsylvania parrothead who is sick of this cold weather and I want to move the family to the land of the seminoles. My wife and I have 3 young daughters (7, 5, 7 mths.) and I need some help from anyone that may have info. What area of Florida would you recommend for a family? Any areas to stay away from? Any help is appreciated. thanks.

I guess it depends on just what your needs are.
>Will you be able to find work?
Some areas are better for certain types of jobs than others.
>What are you moving for?
If it's just warmer weather, you'll find all of FL warmer.
>Do you want a suburban, urban, or rural setting?
>Do you expect it to be a Buffett-beautiful day every day?
>Do you spend a lot of time enjoying outside activities?
We have fishing, boating, golf, hunting, wilderness... but not all
in the same area.

In other words, tell us what you need and want, and we'll help.
See?

Before you do anything, go to one of the newspapers on-line and poke around. i just came back from central and was reading http://orlandosentinel.com and their Career Builder pages. Saw a lot of $10 hr. stuff, that won't feed three Keets.

I really like the gulf coast area north of Tampa Bay. I have family in Spring Hill. don't know what the job situation is there. According to friends, Florida employement has been "Disney-ized" They don't pay much, because if you don't take it, there are 1000 others that will

Thankfully, work is not an issue. I'm retired now (35 yrs. old---lottery winner) and able to live comfortably. I want to move where its warm and I can be close to water in a nice family oriented non commercial setting....good schools, good after school activities for the kids, etc. Appreciate your thoughts.

Heck, in that case I'd head here.

To heck with anywhere else. If you don't have to work and you want the kids to grow up in a great environment, what better place than the Keys? There are plenty of things to keep them occupied just outside their door. If I had kids I'd want them to be island children. In fact, I'd consider further south, like the Virgin Islands (US or British) or the Bahamas. I really wish I had grown up in that kind of setting.

Well Im a Cracker, born and raised in Ft.Pierce,Fla.Known as the Treasure coast...Sabastion to Stuart,is a really good areaVero is a nice place to live,Ft.Pierce has some of the best beaches...job market is not the best in that area, and from what my folks have been telling me its starting to boom once again...property throughout the 90's was dirt cheap..(wish I would have bought some) who new?Check out Jensen Beach, really nice old town...just my thoughts...If ya make it down to the area,be sure to get ya a Maverick flats boar (built in Ft.Pierce, and Jimmy owns one) and try a lil snook fishin...good stuff...watch the gill plates, can be sharp.

Happy Shark and I lived in Sarasota for 20 years. We raised two boys there and I liked the schools. The beaches are one of the best in the world and if money is no object, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy them. There are many different "areas" to Sarasota, whether's its the mainland or one of the keys. If you want more info, let me know. I still love Sarasota, even though I'm a denverite now, and visit whenever I can!

I have to agree with PHAW 100%. I love Sarasota...been going there for the last 20 yrs or so. Siesta Key has the best beach that I've ever fell asleep on!! :D The schools there are much better than the ones in the keys. Lottery winner eh? You're going to need a pool boy when you get there......I'm available !!!! :D

Stlrman...almost forgot this....there are even a couple of Steeler bars in that area. If memory serves me correctly...The Clubhouse(I think thats the name) in Sarasota is one of em.They have paintings on the wall of past Steeler greats and Pirate greats too. (if they are still open...havent been there in 2 yrs) Theres also a bar on 41,north of the airport, that shows all Steeler games during the season.Filled with lots of black an gold !! ..... I'm still available for that pool boy position.

Hi

We did exactly what you want to do, except we came from Rhode Island and I still need to work!! 8)

The Southern Tampa Bay area is by far the best for keets...We have two daughters and they both love it here! Great school system, as well as private schools, if $$ isn't a problem for you. I'd recommend Manatee County as they have several new Family Communities growing right now. Let me know if you want real specific data and I'll PM you...

We've been here almost a year, and wished we would have done it long ago!!

Good Luck!

Boca Raton! It's a no brainer. The last thing I want to do is "dis" any PH's from the west coast. However, Boca has a very strict appearance board and beautification ordinances which in my humble opinion make it as good or better than anywhere on this planet. We are right on th Atlantic Ocean with the gulfstream just off shore, which makes the climate pleasant all year round with far less insect pests. You must settle east of Hwy. I-95 though, because if you go farther west it's a whole different ballgame. Boca has excvellent public schools, and many ,many, affordable private schools as well. Last but not least JB is about 1/2 hr up the road in Palm Beach, but where he is, it's an area where you say to yourself "even if I won the lottery, I still couldn't afford to live here."As always,G.M.,Jr. PS: The Keys are an hour away, KW, about 3 1/2 Hr.s, Orlando and the theme parks about 4hr.s

Forgot to mention South Beach where the beautiful people meet and greet. But thats another whole scene. I'ts about 45 min.s away. Ft. Lauderdale's Las Olas area and the strip are giving South Beach a run for the money, that's 1/2 hr. away. Now I'm getting all wound up and am starting to sound like the chamber of commerce, I could go on & on, but won't. As always, G.M.,Jr.

STLRMAN I have been thining the same thing myself. I too am in PA and looking to go where the weather suits my clothes!

I have 3 keets too (6, 4, 1), so schools and the like are a big concern. I may have a line on a job in West Palm or Tampa.

Any thoughts on those areas would be helpful.

STLRMAN, if we both move to FLA, the first beer is on me! No, wait, you're the lottery winner - you're buying!!!!! :D

ok ok ok, seriosuly....gotta move to c. florida, seminole county is great....1st off, ya got kids and everyone knows as bad as schools in florida are an affluent suburb of orlando is comparably as good as u can get (plenty of private schools otherwise) and heres the kicker
30 minutes to orlando airport, best in state
30 minutes to Universal/seaworld and such
40 minutes to disney
TD waterhouse center almost always has a buffett concert
45 minutes to atlantic ocean (daytona, new smyrna)
1.5 hours to tampa area
i moved to c. florida from CT 5 years ago, its a good place nothing is too far away, never run out of stuff to do. just an opinion
Grandfather always told me if i went down i might never come back again.

yes boca is nice but I-95 if a F**KING DISASTER with all the construction. it seems to have replaced boston's big dig as the nation's never ending make work construction project. it's hell driving from ft. liquordale to west palm airport.

i suspect florida is a lot like arizona for public schools. if ya can afford it ya send your kids to private ones....
