What's the deal with RM Steve?
I've been wondering this for a while and finally decided to ask.. Hell, for all I know Steve is a BNer...
I usually only listen to Radio Margaritaville at work but occasionally will put it on in the evening or night.. No matter what time it is or what day of the week it is, it seems like Steve is always on the air! (I think that's Steve anyway). Does he ever sleep? Does he live at the studio? Does he have a normal schedule and it's just coincidence that he's always on when I'm listening? what's the dilly yo?

From what I can tell, most everything is recorded and run in 8 hour segments that run 3 times in 24 hours. If you listen at 9am you'll hear about the same thing at about 5pm. Obviously, during live shows and special events, the schedule will differ.
I think he does a great job!
I'd like to offer my services to help cover any shifts he can't do, what a cool job. I play Buffett and Island music all day - how cool would it to get paid for it!

Most DJs record their shows...
Recording your shows or segments is common practice nowadays for radio DJs - both the broadcast and net variety.
While listening to your local DJ on 100.5 FM (or whatever), you are probably listening to a voice track rather than hearing the DJ live. It frees the DJs up to do other things during their shift such as produce jingles or work their "other" job at the station such as programmer, web designer, etc.
For stations, it means hiring less people and saving money.
Is it a good thing? That depends on the way you look at it I guess.
Voice tracking started to become common about 7 or 8 years ago. Sometimes you'll hear goofs on the air - such as a DJ announcing a set he hasn't played yet or a set that he played three sets back. You get my point.
I'm sure Steve does a LOT of recording.

Re: Most DJs record their shows...
I think it depends on the station and the market. Most of the CC deejays I know still do live voice work, although they may track a break or two ahead to sneak a cigarette break in.cartmill72 wrote:Recording your shows or segments is common practice nowadays for radio DJs - both the broadcast and net variety.

Yeah, Steve's a nice guy - apparently he and Jimmy go way back. His wife is really nice too, I was able to talk to her gor about 5 minutes at orlando last year. My brother and I met steve for the first time two years ago at Peter Mayer's show in Illinois:

And last year at Tampa, we threw one of these shirts on stage to show our love for "the man:"

God bless him. Steve haikus here.

Re: Most DJs record their shows...
I don't know... I worked for CC about 3 years ago, and there was a good amount of voicetracking going on. I knew one jock who voicetracked a generic show and it was broadcast in at least three markets. I didn't really dig that idea too muchKey Lime Lee wrote:I think it depends on the station and the market.
