Some places hurt more than others. My wife has one on her back abover her shoulder blade are and she said it didn't hurt. The ankle is VERY sensitive and hurts. On the underside of the arm for some people is very sensitive and anywhere they have to go over thin skin over bone. It's not excrutiating but it isn't pleasant.

I want to emphasize what Island Dreamer said it was do it for you, don't let someone influence getting it or the style and where you put it for professional reasons also. AND when you decide. WAIT.. cuz you may change your mind. It took me 22 years to decide :o

I don't want anyone to choose persay I just wanted to see what other parrot head's ideas were. I'm only 17 so I have a little while to go. It's not just a spontanious thing. I know that for a fact. I can see how you wanted a four leaf clover because of your irish heritege but i am all mized and the most proud i am is Japanese. But I was something "beachy" or buffett because it's not just a pretty picture or a nice song for me it is my way of life. I grew up knowing non other them Jimmy Buffett's tales of margaritaville. Even now everyone is into the "pop" scene and I just kick back and listen to my m-ville cd's So you see it might as well be a heritege for me.

I understand that is a way of life....trust me. I've been doing the whole M'ville thing since before I could walk. My parents just happen to be the types to play JB to the stomach of a unborn. I knew mine wasnt quick choice either but I am really glad I didnt get it the way I had planned on my 18th birthday. (my orignal idea: A water polo with flames...WHAT WAS I THINKING!!??!?!) I understand the whole pop thing...even worse I was in High School when it hit its peek. (To the point where a boyfriend asked me to wear a "school girl outfit like that Britney Spears chick") Little Miss. Magic and I would walk the halls singing "Why Dont we Get Drunk?", "Fins", etc and started a JB club with 2 members. Just be really careful of what your choice will be. In 60 years a Palm Tree might turn into a fern and a Parrot might turn into a blob of silly putty.....

BTW #2 tattoo will be on my foot with a small "Aloha"

I got my first tatoo when I was 18. It is a Thunderbird logo (yeah, as in Ford) I like it. I had always had a love affair with those cars...and at the time I owned a 96 V8 Thunderbird (wish I still had it) so on my left sholder I got a tatoo of the thunderbird logo. A little over a year later, I got some blue and purple flames drawn above the center of it, they look really great. I like it! I dunno how I'll feel in ten, twenty, thirty+ years, but hopefully I'll still like it, Ihavent really regretted it since I got it! and no use in that anyway since it isnt going anywhere without making the area look worse! But think LONG AND HARD ABOUT IT before you do it!! PERMINANT PROOF OF TEMPORARY INSANITY! well in some cases.

IslandDreamer wrote:Tips of Advice:
1) dont ask for other people advice. Its your tattoo and only you can truely decide. If you ask people what they think you are going to get 1000 different suggestions and you wont be truely happy with your tat.
2) When you have an idea draw it out and put it somewhere so you will see it everyday....you might get bored with it. Wait and Wait and when you think you are ready WAIT SOME MORE! I am sooooo glad I didnt go with a Flamingo or palm trees when I was 18. Once you get over the fact that YOU want a tattoo SOOO bad and NEED to get it right away you really can think what you want.
3) be really picky about the spot for future professions. (mine is on my lower back so I can show it when I want...)
4) and No it didnt hurt as bad as I thought it was going to. I was sitting on a stool with my feet in a chair bent over with my head between my knees...and that was more painful then the needle. The only thing that was uncomfortable was when he would go over the spine and I could feel it vibrate in my neck.......but it didnt hurt I swear!

Happy Tattooing!
That is probably the best advice I've heard. Every time someone asks about mine and say they want to get one, I suggest picking out an image that means something to you and waiting 6 months. After 6 months, go and see at least three tattoo parlors and watch them give tattoos. Then, if you still want that original picture, go for it.

One little thing in case you haven't picked it up yet, they are addictive.

THis topic wins the most re occuring theme in this messagboard I believe :D Go for it, if you love Buffett and you want a tat, then do it!!!! The worst that can happen is you won't like it later and then you can get it covered. This is mine, and it is the Southern Cross, Buffett themed and fishing themed, perfect for me

I am working on getting my belly all tightened up for a tat around my belly button so if anyone has any ideas on what would look cool there (and original) I would love any thoughts. Fishing or boat themed is what I am trying to stick with
Oh and Rick, I liked your idea about the boat with the porthole! Oh and by the way its YACHT... DUMBA*S

Awww, the Southern Cross, boy do I miss it.

That's it; I'm packing up my bags, selling the house, and running back to Australia.

I got a belly ring just after I turned 30. I was finished having babies and I'd lost 90 pounds. I wanted it and I did it. Since then, I've wanted a tattoo as well. I want a margarita glass tipping over. I'm sure everyone here knows the logo I'm talking about. And I want it on my ...uh...hip??? Okay, my heiny cheek. My man doesn't like that part cuz he KNOWS I'll be showing it. So, I may have to have it a little higher up. The other choice is the small of my back. I hear that hurts a lot. Good luck on yours. I will work up the courage one day. Just don't know when that day will be.

OK can anyone else see my pics cause I'm only getting words??? The back isnt so bad, I had it numbed, but that only lasts for like 1/2 hour for the part that isnt so bad(the outline) and it was becoming un numbed for the shading...OUCH!

I could never get one on my butt, because I would never have my pants on then I would have to show it off all the time.

I did have an idea for the belly tat,....the Miami Dolphins logo with the dolphin jumping out of the belly button

Oh honey, just remember that that is one part of your body that does grow, especially as you get older (and fat cells just shrink, they never go away without lipo)!!
And I forget what movie it was in (I remember that it was terrible, but the advice was good), but the line was something about always getting tattoos on places you can't see, so you never get tired of looking at them. I know I wouldn't be nearly as bothered by my tattoo if I didn't see it every time I shower, or use the restroom, or am wearing something very low rise.

I have 2 now and they are where I really can't see em ...my lower back (yeah my hubby loves looking at a big fish every time we...never mind  ) and one on my calf. I know we get bigger as we get older (hence the I am going to the gym to flatten my tummy), but oh well hopefully I can keep going to the gym and TRY to keep the fat cells under control. And if it gets ugly, I can have it covered with something else

Oh and to landshark3...the Southern Cross can also be seen in Key West..thats where I have seen it :)

Thought I would throw my 2 cents in here as well.

Like other have said, personalize it. I drew mine from what I saw in my head and then the artist put the artistic style to it and made it look good.

It is obviously in my sig line. I put an "J" and an "E" on the sails for my daughters and there is an "A" on one of the palm trees for my wife. Not the easiest to see from the picture, but it is a parrot in a hammock between two palm trees with a wave crashing and a sail boat. I kind PM a bigger picture if needed.

It is exactly what I wanted, no regrets. :D

One more thing, it is addictive. I already know what my next will be.
