Driving to Key West

Post by SmartWoman »

A long time ago, someone posted a guide to Buffett related places to visit when driving to Key West. Does anyone remember this guide and where I can find it?

Driving to Key West!

Post by Fastmovinangel »

I'm a native Atlantan but currently live in Carrollton. Grew up in College Park, directly in the path of our new 5th runway! I work in ATL at the corner of 14th and West Peachtree, so I am in the midst of our great city during the day and out in the beautiful country of what is now, believe it or not, part of Metro Atlanta at night! Best of both worlds! However, most of my time on the weekends is spent at Margaritaville! (Good answer, right?!?!) What is your locale?

Cool! I went to West Georgia for grad school back in the mid 90's. Are you enjoying Carrollton?

Yeah, "Metro Atlanta" is a very relative phrase these days.
My wife and I live up in the Alpharetta area and I work over in Duluth.

Page needs a little updating. A nice park I took my kids to yesterday in Key Largo is Harry Harris Park -MM94. Woody's is now basically a titty bar/redneck join....don't take the kids. Monte's in Summerland Key recently moved to Roosevelt in Key West, and they do have good food. I would include Sundowners Key Largo and remove Alabama Jacks. Make your own decision on Alabama Jacks and Card Sound....I go there for lunch now and then, but given a limited amount of time I would detour it. Not that big a deal.

The best grouper sandwich I have found, in fact had dinner there last night, is in Tavernier, just south of the Tavernier Creek Marina. It's called Craigs....and it should be on the list. It's not on the water or in a cheeki hut, but don't miss it.

Kind of like this-if you are hell bent on seeing all the Buffett-esque places here, you'll miss seeing the keys altogether.

The Rain Barrell is a cool place, it is in Islamorada also and is a local artists co-op. They have some GREAT stuff by local artists, some great stuff to take home...trust me on this one.

It might sound a bit touristy, but as you get into Key Largo, stop in at the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce, it's right next to the Dive Shop on the right. You can pick up info on the latest happenings and events that are going on, which you won't find on many web pages. At the Chamber, there are a few machines which you can pick up the local papers (Keynoter, Keys Times) and see what is going on locally. This can help geatly.

I stayed in Marathon one night on a house boat at Faro Blanco Marine that was awesome. There is also a resort near there that you can go to and eat at, swim at the beach and there is a dolphin pen where you can swim with them for about $30 or so. One of my favorite places was the 7 Mile Cafe just before the 7 Mile Bridge the atmosphere was great (out doors, relaxing) and the food was even better the Corona was nice and cold. But when you get down there you have to go to Turtle Crawls the best seafood bisque ever, mmmmmmm. everything there is good, reasonable $$ lunch menu.

Mangrove Mama's is awesome. It is about 20 minutes North of KW (sorry, can't recall the island). Heading South, it is on the right. The locals will know about it.

Yeah, you are right...Lower Sugarloaf. Also, on Sugarloaf, there is the "Bat House"....you have to check that out as well. And there is skydiving out there, too.

Did anyone mention Big Pine Key? Take a right at the light to go to the No Name Pub. You can also check out the Big Blue Hole out there...is the aligator still there? Haven't been that way in awhile.

If you're passing thru Key Largo around lunch time you have to try Hobos. It's before you get to the Holiday Inn-and on the right side of the road. Nothing fancy, just basically a sports bar/restaurant with great food and reasonable prices. :D
