Covers

Post by Ilph »

Okay, we had the thread, what song would you like Jimmy to cover, now what artists have covered Jimmy Buffett songs on their albums?

Here's what I know of:
Alan Jackson - Margaritaville
George Strait - Stars on the Water
Doug Supernaw - He Went to Paris
Kenny Chesney - Come Monday

Willie Nelson-"Railroad Lady."

Waylon Jennings-"He Went To Paris"

The Gourds-"Railroad Lady" (in concert only)

Todd Snider-"Margaritaville" (punk rock version that's never been officially released)

Bob Dylan-"A Pirate Looks At Forty" (in concert only)

Phish-I'm pretty sure they've covered a Buffett song live at one time or another. Isn't that how Buffett ended up on their tribute album?

Not sure if they count but there's that bluegrass Pickin' On... tribute and a reggae one if I'm not mistaken.

BTW, "Stars on the Water" is a Rodney Crowell song and "Banana Republics" was written and first recorded by Steve Goodman (even though I wouldn't really consider anything done by Muzak a cover).

Edited to add: A real cool site for this sort of thing is The Covers Project except they seem to have more than a few inaccurancies in their Buffett entry. Listed first are the songs Buffett has covered, then a list of covers of his songs by other artists:

Jack Johnson

Post by cartmill72 »

Its so funny that everyone always forgets Jack Johnson. The other day there was a thread about Kenny Chesney being the new "Buffett." While those comparisons are good ones, Jack Johnson really embodies the Buffett way of life, too. After all, he's a surfer who's mellow music is all about chilled out living.

At any rate, he's covered "A Pirate Looks At 40" on the September Sessions soundtrack. He's also played the song live many times, including the Santa Cruz show from 2/14/02 (widely available on the internet).

For those of you who aren't familiar with him or are looking for a less country companion to Buffett's music, Jack Johnson is an enjoyable artist with some great tunes.

p.s. I just looked through 91 live Phish CDs (600+ songs) and I can't find one Buffett cover. I'm not saying they haven't done one of his numbers, but I certainly can't find it (They did play Brown Eyed Girl on 11/16/95). There is a web site out there of every song Phish has ever performed if anyone is up to the task of combing through it.

I know Jimmy covered Phish, (he sings "Gumbo" on "Sharin' In The Grove") but I've not heard of them doing one of his tunes.

I may be wrong about Phish then, I just figured he was included on their tribute album because he'd given them props somewhere along the way which apparently may not be so. I recall hearing a commercial for a Phish concert a few years ago that ended with the tagline "Goodnight, we're Jimmy Buffett", so, if nothing else, there at least appears to be some sort of mutual respect between the two.

Cool that Jack Johnson has covered "A Pirate Looks At Forty" but I caught a bit of his performance at the Austin City Limits Music Festival last year and it was all I could do to stay awake.

Oops! I forgot to comment on this before ...
YES, there is a Reggae tribute out there, as well as a fairly recent Blues one also (and some group called The Buffetteers :o have an album of tunes too).
