Alan Jackson Inspires Jimmy Buffett?

Post by Mr Play »

On one of the local radio stations today, the DJ said Alan Jackson had inspired Jimmy Buffett to release a country CD. Wasn't Jimmy singing country songs before Alan was even born?

Consider this. How would "Migration" be received by today's mainstream country audience? That song was originally released on A1A 30 years ago. Hey Jimmy if you're reading this, maybe you should re-release the song on your new country CD that Alan Jackson inspired!

My wife says I'm crazy, but I get that all the time. What do y'all think?

I guess more appropriately, it should've been Alan inspired Buffett to produce another country album.

DJays were probably referring to the timing of the Buffett country album on the heels of the smash with Alan Jackson.

Would be nice if they researched a little before saying things. Heck, a quick read here will find the JB quotes claiming the country record was in the works before 5 O Clock Somewhere.

Whoever inspired who first does not matter to me, they both are great. I just went to a AJ concert at the Nassau Coliseum (Long Island) last Saturday and it was unbelievable.

I was sitting around a lot of duel AJ and JB phans & all of us were holding out hope that JB would show up for 5 o'clock somewhere, but no luck. AJ did a great set and during the first 5 minutes of his encore he just walked around the stage signing autographs, it was a class act.

If anyone has a chance to go, take advantage of it...it is no Buffett concert (what is really?) but it was still well worth the price of admission.

Don't get me wrong Snake - I'm not knocking Alan Jackson. I've been a fan of his for a long time. 5'O Clock Somewhere is one of my favorite new songs from anyone in a while. The rest of the world just doesn't appreciate Jimmy's history in Nashville. Most of them think he's never tried this before.

With the recent trend toward the beach lifestyle in mainstream country music, more and more people are discovering Jimmy Buffett. It's our duty to teach them that Jimmy hasn't changed - the world around him has evolved and come to appreciate the things he's always done.

Buffett doesn't own a trademark on mixing Carribean and country influences ("Gulf and Western") though he's been the most sucessful and convincing at it by far. I also feel that Buffett's music HAS changed, which is only natural, but I prefer his early works over most anything he's turned out in recent years. That's not a slam, just my personal opinion because I do portions of his newer albums or I wouldn't still be buying them on the day of release. When he was turning out those early records he was pretty much living the lifestyle he was singing about which just isn't the same anymore (nor would I expect it to be) since he's no longer a beach bum but a multi-millionaire. Somehow his comtemporaries such as John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker and the late great Steve Goodman managed to remain cult figures while staying true to their muse but somewhere along the line Buffett began to stray from the humble beginnings of his early recordings. I believe this began shortly after he realized he wouldn't be able to stay in this business forever unless he had something to fall back on. Thus began the Margaritaville chains, the birth of the parrothead phenomenon and along with it a dilution of his original style both musically and lyrically. I'm a fan of both his past and present work, I just happen to think the majority of the best of what he's had to offer is in his earlier records. There have been some bright spots on his newer albums but they've been few and far between, at least to my ears.

Don't be so fast to write off the new album. My guess is that Jimmy will put his own unique spin on things (like he always does) and the album will be great. I am hoping we may even see similar stuff to some of the things that are on L&Din3/4T or A1A :D (fingers crossed)

I wouldn't say Jimmy is just country or Island music. It is basically Island Folk with a little country mixed in. But look at it this way, all the new country songs are island folk. Just a little country thrown in. Yes Jimmy started singing country before island folk.

I hope it will not be all country, Dancing in your Speedo and country music do not mix very well.

My two favorite music genres, country and Jimmy (he's in a league of his own). I can't wait for this album.
