I 've always been a fan of Carl Hiaasen......Anybody have any other Buffettesque writers to reccomend? If so what works of theirs?

I read two books recently that I enjoyed:

A Trip to the Beach

&

An Embarrassment of Mangoes

They are both non-fiction accounts of people who left the hustle and bustle of North America and moved to the carribean (sp).

I am currently reading Sunfun Calypso which is fiction about a guy living in BVI. It is very hard to find and I only tracked down a second hand copy through the internet. It is printed in the Virgin Islands.

Hi PR! Remember me from San Jose??

Funny, I was actually just looking at these books on Amazon earlier today.........they sound like good reading....so does Sunfun Calypso.

I'm getting ready to dive into The Conch That Roared......a non-fiction account of the secession of Key West from the US......a friend of mine read it not too long ago and said it was great!

S.V. Date is pretty good for pulp. James Hall is another Floridesque writer, though he's not as humorous as Hiassen.

Nobody's mentioned John Macdonald yet? His Travis Macgee stuph is purty good. Good enough for Bubba to mention him. :D

I really like Randy Wayne White.

Ah, a fellow HST fan. Nice. You should talk to Zanth - he's real big into Dr. Gonzo.

Sure I remember you from San Jose! I wish I could have hung out with you all longer :(

Another BN thread posted this link about "tropical themed" books:

The Conch that Roared is listed on this sight as well as A Trip to the Beach. Mangoes is a very new book which is why it may not be listed.

I think "The Conch . . ." will be the next book on my list. It sounds like a fun read and I've been kinda on a non-fiction kick lately

Buffett-esque writers

Post by stlrman »

I've read all of Tom Corcoran's books and they are awesome...all based in key west (Bone Island Mambo, Mango Opera, Octopus Alibi). I don't know if it's been mentioned before, but Corcoran co-wrote some Buffett tunes (Cuban Crime of Passion) and took the photos for some of his albums.

Tim Dorsey's books are great, sorta like Hiaasen only more action packed and funnier.

Laurence Shames is also great.
