Re: What are YOU reading?
Not sure why I bothered buying the Kindle before my trip...reading was not in the schedule!
I tried it on the plane...but the reading light was sucky and I just couldn't concentrate enough. I did use the kindle to play word games and mahjong solitaire though.
I started one book on the kindle a month ago...got 4 chapters in and that was it. I seriously had NO time to read, by the time I fell into bed I was too exhausted to do much more than upload any photos I'd taken. Those two little kids wore me out! Then I had the unfortunate encounters with the ginormous cockroach (in my bed) and the giant centipede...so most of what little sleep I got was with the light on. Not exactly a restful, relaxing trip to the islands.
Since I've been home I've read the latest Clive Cussler and Johnathan Kellerman paperbacks, so now I'm starting on Molokai, which made the round trip to Hawaii and never once got opened. So far, so good...but very sad.

So, at ETP's prompt, I am reading My Life in France by Julia Child. I cannot help but to hear Julia's voice narrating it all as I read!
(just one of the many voices in my head, apparently) ![battingeyes [smilie=battingeyes.gif]](./images/smilies/battingeyes.gif)

Just reviewed SING YOU HOME, Jodi Picoult's latest. I think she is the most intelligent, fearless writer on the planet. She has complete command of her craft. I think her use of all the characters' point of view/voices (a nod to Auntie here) is brilliant.
Here's a link to my review. Enjoy.

Re: What are YOU reading?
Finished Molokai in a couple of days...it was that good. I just couldn't put it down. I'd forgotten how much I enjoy historical fiction, and this book will take its place as one of my faves. It seems like it has been a long time since a book has resonated so much with me. I really hate buying bestsellers that everyone raves about, only to be bitterly disappointed...like with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Water for Elephants. Bought another book by the same author, hope I'll like it as much as Molokai.

I liked WfE, but could not finish TGwtDT. You know the original title was "Men Who Hate Women"?
Thanks for the tip.
I just finished Jodi Picoult's new one, SING YOU HOME. Loved it. Read the new Stuart Woods last night ... light, entertaining, fun.

Re: What are YOU reading?

Revisionist historical fiction of what would have happened if Charles Lindbergh (a known isolationist and reputed Nazi sympathizer) had been elected President in 1940. Very interesting and well written and, most surprisingly for a Phillip Roth novel, almost no talk of masturbation.
Take me for what I am, a star newly emerging.

Other than American Pastoral (which I believe won a Pulitzer), The Plot Against America is Roth's best work. I don't recall any talk of masturbation which, as we all know, is a Roth expectation for all his work: most notable Sabbath's Theatre where the protagonist watches his wife's ex lover pleasure himself on her grave and he then decides to eat the dirt - no joke . . . and Portnoy's Complaint where the protagonist uses his mom's dinner from the butcher as a make shift vagina on a subway ride . . . no joke). Anywho . . . I loved The Plot. Awesome read. A must. A top ten book (along with American Pastoral) written in the past 25 years - or so.
the hit and run is as good as any religion around this time of year . . .

Alvin masturbates against the basement wall while watching the girls walk to school through the window, and then doesn't clean up after himself. That's it.drunkpirate66 wrote:popcornjack wrote:

From a critical standpoint I think it's written really well, but I have a hard time suspending disbelief and I find myself thinking from time to time "Well, this is just what he thinks would have happened." The best of it when he focuses on Phillip's life and experiences and how he sees the world changing around him.

As far as memoir type things, I enjoyed Carrie Fisher's Wishful Drinking, too, although it definitely reads like somebody experiencing a manic episode. Some of her stories are priceless.
I knew this girl made of memories and phrases, who lived her whole life in both chapters and stages.

Re: What are YOU reading?
That's really it. One man's take on what would've happened . . . "if". It's a fun, and mildly disturbing, concept. Its what Back to the Future II and Mr. Destiny could've been if Phillip Roth took the time to help develop a borderline credible plotline as time was "skewed" into an alternate realm. Which gets me thinking ( a rarity) about Bill and Ted's influence on the world with their time travel. There must be consequences! Then you bring a little JJ Abrahms "whatever happened happened" time travel theory into play and the entire paradox must be re-thought. In other words, Inglorious Bastards could've happened. Really. Revisionist or just a visionist - its fun to mess with history. Terra Nova, anyone?popcornjack wrote:Alvin masturbates against the basement wall while watching the girls walk to school through the window, and then doesn't clean up after himself. Re: What are YOU reading?
Um, this is the "What are YOU reading?" thread and not the "What over hyped science fiction tv show are you waiting for this year?" thread.
(on an even more unrelated note. I saw a great episode of "Phineas and Ferb" today that dealt with time traveling to the future while re-imagining a previous episode that involved time traveling to the past. At one point they had two future Candaces, one from the future that had happened and the other from the future that had been altered when Candace finally busted her brothers. Heavy stuff for a show theoretically designed for young kids. Theoretically.)

The Bonehunters.... Book 6 of the Malazan Series by Steven Erikson....
1200 pages
(I'm at about page 800 so about 450 pages to go, more or less....)
but then I still have 2 more books before I can finally catch up to the storyline....
BTW, anyone read Game of Thrones? I believe I have, but it's been awhile so I'll probably start that series (Songs of Fire and Ice by George R Martin) next after I finish this one (in about a couple of months anyway
