I also read "Sullivan's Island." The main character in the two books are very similar. So far, "Plantation" is pretty good....I'd recommend it if you liked "Sullivan's Island."

I just finished "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel. It isn't a Buffett/Caribbean style book but it's set on the ocean and has an incredible ending.
Right now I'm working on "The Vision of the Anointed" by Thomas Sowell and "Martin Scorsese presents The Blues", the book version of the PBS television series.

Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier.
I loved the movie, and went out and bought the book . . .
I have to say that I found this book to be a modern classic. First of all, I was suprized that it was written by a man, then to learn that it is based a ancestor of the author. The theme is strong and very timely, the characters are well developed, and Frasier uses a nontraditional, interesting style in writing it. And in the book, Inman has a great sense of humor the movie did not capture.
Next?
Fast Food Nation and
Reefer Madness by Eric Schlosser, not necessarily in that order.

I've read all three of her books and have really enjoyed them. Isle of Palms is just as good as the other two. Her latest, Shem Creek, comes out in August, 2004 and you can bet I'll be reading it shortly after it comes out.
If you liked those books you would probably like The Queen Bee of Mimosa Branch. by Haywood Smith. I picked it up and laughed all the way through it. I need to pick up The Red Hat Club, also by Haywood Smith. My wife gets a giggle out of how much I enjoy these "chick books."
Have almost finished Triggerfish Twist. Picked up Digital Fortress in the Miami airport but still don't know what is next on the list.

Thanks, Ilph, for starting this thread... I LOVE reading what books people read and why. For the 40 days of Lent, I am reading "The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren - a chapter a day. Wait, that sounds like doing penance or something; it's really inspiring. Also, just started "The Summons" by John Grisham today. Got it at yard sale yesterday. I read Cold Mountain in 1999... Great book, sorry I missed the movie. Next I plan to read Sue Monk Kidd's "The Secret Life of Bees." I've had it, but haven't started it yet. Recently read "Seabiscuit." Used to live two blocks from Shem Creek in Mt. Pleasant, SC, so I'll have to read that when author finishes it. We have "Sullivan's Island," but haven't read it yet. Have Joe Merchant, too, hubby read, but not me yet... Gonna have to catch up! Bought a Stephen King movie today, "Hearts in Atlantis."

I saw an interview she gave about that book and made a mental note to read it. She said it was the first book she'd done based on a true story. I read one of her books in Readers Digest Condensed Book form...forget what letter!

What's next? Don't know. I love Sue Grafton and am waiting for "R is for..." Possibly Grass Roots or Deep Lie by Stuart Woods.
I'm an avid bookworm!

You're welcome. I'm really enjoying an itnelligent discussion about books too. With my girlfriend and friends it's usually "Nah, I don't read. Oooh! MTV has something about something stupid on!" Right now I'm reading "Neverwhere" by Neil Gaiman. I read "American Gods" last year and couldn't put it down.

Have just been rereading P.D.James "Death in Holy Orders" - I love her detective stories and Inspector Dalgliesh is one of the most interesting detectives in literature.
am also reading "Wine and War" by Donal and Petie Kladstrup - fascinating account of what happened to the wine regions and their liquid treasure during the Nazi invasion.
Loved "Seabiscuit" - great account of racing and the Depression years.

For those who love vampires, I found an author who writes a lot better than Anne Rice!! Her name is Laurell K Hamilton!!!!
She writes in the first person, and the heroine is a real smartass and sarcastic person!!! But one with a lot of power!!!!
Be warned though, some of her book (especially the last two in the series) have some extremely steamy parts!!!!
I have read all 12 of the books in the past 3 weeks. They are a quick read. Only one of the books is over 400 pages.
Cant wait for the next one to come out!!!!
