Yes. Wonderful place. Check the PlayaInfo website and message board at http://playadelcarmeninfo.com
(I am known there as BarbC, and I've been trying to stir up interest in a Parrotheads in Playa club, probably virtual).
Playa has big and medium sized all-inclusives and also lots of "downtown" hotels, near or far from the action. There are restaurants, a fine beach, diving, shopping, ferry to Cozumel, lots of happy people.
There is a singer-guitarist named Chuck Rose -- I think -- who is also a scuba instructor (what a life) and he plays Buffettesque stuff at a local bar most evenings. You'll see all this over on the Playainfo Forum
http://playadelcarmeninfo.com/forum

Have a wonderful time!

One of my favorite places on the planet, interesting people, laid back attitude, can't beat it. There's something for everyone, but it's not TOO big and touristy (if you want that, take a 1 hour bus ride north to Cancun). Be sure to also visit Puerto Morelos (small town between PdC and Cancun, mentioned by Buffett himself as one of his favorite beach towns). Stop by the Tequila Barrel or the Blue Parrot for a drink, visit the Mayan ruins at Tulum or Coba, stop by the Xaman-Ha aviary...you get the idea.

Sounds great Lundah...thanks for the tips...Looking forward to the trip 8)

Mayan ruins, Which of the two would you recommend between Tulum and Coba? We are only going to have the time to do one day trip

Thanks

Only resort i stayed at there was the Hide Away... very pricey (for me) but it was a business trip....lol

Our rooms at that time (jan 2002) were 800 a night for a double and suits were 1200. It has 3 major eating places and the inclusive for drinks and food... service was excellent but the net connection was kinda sucky...

Markets were fun as was the night life...

After living in Cancun i am kinda partial to it, but Playa was really nice too!

hope that helps...
have fun!!
it's my own damn fault...

I would TOTALLY be in for a phlocking in PDC, it would be the perfect place for one! And forget the big resorts, there's plenty of small hotels in town that go for $25-50/night (I would recommend the Eclipse or the Maya-Bric). Only thing is I just started a new job, so I don't have any vacation time banked up yet, can we wait for late fall/early winter?

Also, pirateat30, if I could only visit one ruins site, it'd be Tulum. Coba is farther away and not nearly as well excavated yet, so there's fewer buildings. Tulum is a short trip from PDC ($2/person via collectivo, taxi is about $8 for a carload), and it's also right on the sea (bring your bathing suit, there's a nice beach right within the ruins). Check my Webshots galleries (I use same name there), I should have photos from both posted there. Be sure to stop by the Tequila Barrel on Av. 5 in PdC and have a cervesa for me!

Loved Playa when we were there. Hope it hasn't grown up too much!

The first time we were there aaround 15 years ago, there were absolutely no large hotels and it was a sleepy village (but then again so was Cozumel)

Last time we were there they had some lovely hotels, but things weren't too built up. We took a trip snorkeling in the cenotes. It was really nice. The beac was beautiful too.
