COZUMEL TO CANCUN MARGARITAVILLE?
I will be on a cruise this spring with my family that stops in Cozumel - We really want to go to Cancun to catch Margaritaville there...does anyone know or have experience with transportation from the cruise ship dock in Cozumel to Cancun?? I don't know either if the ship will have any excursions to Cancun or not....any info appreciated if you have done this before....Thanks in advance!!
There's just too much to see waiting in front of me.....

Wow! Never thought I'd be telling someone to not book right over to a Margaritaville whenever possible, but.......Cozumel IS Margaritaville. It's one of THE diving/snorkeling destinations of the entire world. Rent some snorkeling equipment and check out the reef.......you'll feel like you're in a Jacques Cousteau film (seriously!), it's like swimming in an aquarium there. You will NEVER forget the day the ship stopped in Cozumel. There are probably some dive shops that take snorkelers out to some shallow spots on the reef and they'll teach you to snorkel in about 5 minutes. You really just need to know how to float.
But......if your life's ambition is to see every Margaritaville in the world and so you must get to Cancun, the ferry between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel departs almost hourly, so you have to schedule 2 hours each way, just to get to Playa. Then you have to take a taxi for the 35 miles to Cancun and another cab for the return trip and you may be doing all this in Spanish. Sigh, I'm tired already! Myself, I'd prefer to search for the perfect Margarita in Cozumel and save Cancun for another trip.
Sounds so fun. Wish I was going with ya!

Thanks for the info...sounds like it may be too much of an undertaking...Maybe we'll just wait for the spring breakers to leave town and fly down for a long weekend just to get in Margaritaville - We have visited all but the Cancun and Vegas branches, and hope to get Vegas in when JB is rumored to possibly be in town in October.....

Unless the cruise is running a shore trip to Cancun for shopping, I'd say it would be too much hassle. Margaritaville Cancun is in the Flamingo Plaza mall, so all the big shopping tours from cruise ships will stop there. However, doing it on your own from Cozumel is at least a 2 hour trip each way (Ferry from Cozumel to Playa Del Carmen, then a bus to Cancun, then a taxi or another bus to the mall). You'd be much better off just staying on the island, it's a gorgeous place. If your budget allows, rent a car and drive to the far side of the island, you'll see some spectacular secluded beaches and a handful of cool little beach bars (just go easy on the cervesas if you're driving). Then stop at Chankanaab or Dzul-Ha and do some snorkeling, and haggle with the vendors at the shops in town (if the price isn't marked it's always negotiable, even if it's marked it usually is too!).

Thanks for the info...you guys are the greatest! I was reading a little about the Cancun branch this evening and read that there had been a fire that had damaged the Margaritaville there at the Flamingo Mall...called the Key West location and they didn't know anything about it...I want to be sure it's open before going....We may just back out on the cruise and go to directly to Cancun instead....I hear the Moon Palace is really nice...Thanks again for all the info!!

Oh yeah, the Cozumel to Cancun thing is difficult to do in a short time period.
Staying in the area is the way to go. But as nice as the Moon Palace may be, it's not the best place to stay and quite expensive as well. There are SO many alternatives.
LOTS of specials going on right now too...LOTS!
If you want Mexico info...just ask. I have a PH.D in PDC (Playa del Carmen)!

Hi!
Oh, yeah! The fire........here are some links from Feb. you might want to check out. The restaurant wasn't damaged, so it has probably reopened by now. Since Margaritaville is a must-see for you, call and find out what's up!

I'm liking the land trip idea.......saw an unbelievable price for a week-long cruise that stops in Belize City, Roatan and some other island, but how can you spend only a day in each of these places? How would I choose between snorkeling, finding my fave beach, fave bar, or trying all the exotic fruit at the market? Or being there at night? (And how long does it take to get all those people into BC from a big ship, water depth inside the reef is only 6 feet or so! Did they dredge a channel for cruise ships? But that's another topic.) So I decided it would be torture rather than enjoyable, even at $400 each.
It would be funny if you ended up taking a bus to Playa del Carmen and then the ferry over to Cozumel!! Warning, though, take all your stuff with you cause you might not want to go back to Cancun - it's only a little bridge that separates Cancun from Mexico! Don't miss Tulum, check out Chichen Itza. Have fun!
