Misunderstood Lyrics

Post by finzz2dlft »

OK, this is embarrassing to admit, but I can't be the only one! So 'fess up. Who else will admit to completely misunderstanding a lyric or two from a particular Buffett song? Since I asked, I'll go first!

The first time I heard "Lovely Cruise", I swore that Bubba was siging, "It's been a long day through" instead of "It's been a lovely cruise." I sang it that way for weeks before a fellow PHan took pity on me and asked just what the h@ll I was singing.

When I was around 8-9 years old and heard "Come Monday" on the radio, I always thought he was saying "Commaday". I had no idea what that meant, but I sang it all the same.

How's this?

Perrier blues
By: jimmy buffett
1978
-- spoken:
"this is a brand new song we’d like to do for you now. and, I wrote this
Song sittin’ sandin’ the ol’ main mast sittin’ in the hurricane hole, in
Nassau, bahamas. about to throw up and the only thing that could get me
Through was a bottle of perrier and a jackson browne album. so, this is
Called perrier blues."

Ridin’ high atop the main mast
Harbor stretched out below
All day I’ve been feelin’ kind of half-assed
So I asked the boy to lower me slow
Lower me slow

Sat down and drank me some perrier
Watched the seaplane disappear out of sight
Confused in my head well I jumped back in bed
Wondering who’s at the fronton tonight
Shinin’ bright

I know the night and I miss it
I’ve got this thing for applause
But like a cat on my rockin’ chair cushion
I’ve got to stretch my claws
Move my jaw

I know I’ve got the best of both worlds
Though that sounds like a t.v. show
When that anchor goes down and the sails are all furled
Well it’s back on the road I go
Back I go

Well I b**** about the food and the weather
Wondering why the hell I ever came back
But knowing deep down I love this merry-go-round
And I can’t wait to lay down this track
When I get back

Yeah, I know the night and I love it
I’ve got this thing for a show
If the ball’s hit my way I’m going to glove it
’cause that’s the only thing I know
All I know

Yeah, I know the night and I miss it
I’ve got this thing for applause
But like a cat on my rockin’ chair cushion
I’ve got to stretch my claws
Move my jaw
Move my jaw

Can’t seem to lose those perrier blues
Can’t seem to lose those perrier blues
Can’t seem to lose those perrier blues

On Come Monday, for the longest time I thought "California has worn me quite thin" was "California is warm but quiet then."

I was reading a book on misunderstood lyrics and it says that people think Jimmy say "I blew out my flip-flop, stepped on a poptart". I never heard that, nor do I know of anyone who has cut their heel on a poptart.

Funny you say that tdp. When I was in college, that's exactly what I thought he was saying. "Stepped on a poptart". Never could figure out why he cut his heel. :D :D

I was about twelve and couldn't figure out what a "brown elly haze" was. It wasn't until later that I realized it was a "brown L.A. haze"

Here's what I got:

Play Ball!
2,3,4
Where's my per diem
Ladies and Gentlemen, the Coral Rhymer Band (this one has always thrown me)
Fingers gonna bat (I think this is where the confustion lies)
Hey, Bobby where're the keys to the rent-a-car
Jimmy, Jimmy, can I open the show in Atlanta, please
Ignore me, don't ever start a band

Hope that helps

And I always thought it was Fingers go to bed... with some confusion as was mentioned earlier... gonna bat does make sense though!

They probably too young to know what a poptop was :o

I had to have it explained to me when I was younger.

At first I was sure on Come Monday he was saying "brown oily haze". I wasn't sure what that was, but figured it just couldn't be good.
