Can anyone suggest cheap hotels that are walking distance from the St Pete forum? What is the tailgating scene in Tampa like?

The Forum/Ice Palace is downtown. There's a Marriott right there, but it's new and I doubt it's cheap. In fact there probably won't be anything cheap within walking distance. You could try, just for kicks, staying at the new Hard Rock Hotel and Casino just outside of town. They may have a shuttle service, and even if they don't it could be worth checking out anyway. AS far as tailgating goes, I haven't been to a Buffett show in Tampa, but the parking situation is a pain. I had a reserved spot for the last show I went to there, and the lot filled up anyway! Good luck.

Go to Newk's across the street from the Forum, it's the place to be.

The Tampa Bay PHC says:

Pre Concert Party - Channelside
Post Concert Party - Newk's

Lodging Information:
Marriott Downtown is sold out.

Best Option is:
Best Western Westshore Hotel is located in the heart of Tampa’s Westshore Business District. Just one block north of I-275 and 5 miles from the location of the concert(the Forum). The property provides 237 beautiful guest rooms including King, Queen and Double/Double bed. They can accommodate the Parrot Heads at a rate of $69.00 per room, per night ( plus 12% sales tax) including breakfast. Individuals can call Jennifer to book their reservation and just need to ask for the "Parrot Head" rate. Jennifer Kaczenski, Best Western Westshore Hotel, 1200 North West Shore Blvd.,Tampa, FL 33607, ph: (813) 281-3523, fx: (813) 282-0055, or e-mail Jennifer.

Another Option is:
Radison Hotel Riverwalk, 200 No. Ashley St., Tampa, FL which is located downtown Tampa and is in walking distance (about 1/2 mile from the location of the concert). Rates are currently from $119(group rate if you book 10 rooms or more) to 139/nt (singe booking). There is also a booking online rate of $109/nt. Go to www.radissonhotel to get this limited time special offer. Contact Amy at 813-226-4427 and mention "Parrot Heads" to get the best rate available or the main number is 813-223-2222.

(Poor Amy. She's not the one to call at the Radisson any more,
but she is very nice. :D )

We've stayed at the Hyatt downtown. I don't think it's too expensive, but I haven't checked the prices lately. Not much fun, mostly business travelers, but it's pretty nice and you can walk to the show from there. Just an idea.

There's not much in the way of parking around the Forum, and the lots that are there are small, so the tailgating scene is Newk's or Channelside. And I agree Newk's is the place. Jim Morris is playing the pre-show again. Last year it was rocking right up to show time and again right after the show let out.
