Wacked-Up Computer Screen Problem!

Post by Bob Roberts »

I have had trouble with this computer screen for a couple of weeks now, and it's getting worse. In the middle of use, the top half of the screen will go blank, and there will be a bright white line across the middle seperating the blank top half from the still projecting bottom half. The way I've found to fix it is to wiggle the power cord in the back, and eventually it clicks and comes back on completely. I switched the power cords between to monitor and the CPU just to make sure that it wasn't a cord problem, and that didn't seem to make a difference. Anybody had this problem before? Anybody know how to fix it or have any tips? I'm worried in a couple of days that I'll be stuck without a solution. :-? :(

You mention the power cord from the monitor goes into the CPU. Have you tried plugging the monitor power directly into the wall? The power supply in the CPU might be having a tough time powering the CPU and the monitor. Other general stuff you can try is making sure the video card (if not on the motherboard) is seated securely in the CPU case. You might need to crack the case for this, so be sure this won't void any warranty. Also, if it was software related, might want to make sure you have the most recent video card drivers.

Bob,

It sounds like a board problem inside the monitor to me.

The monitor does not plug into the CPU. The CPU and the Monitor have the same type of power cord, which are both plugged into a power strip, so I just switched them to see if it was a cord problem.

Rick, you may be on the right track. Any idea of how to fix this myself?

Sounds like a deflection amp problem in the monitor itself. Probably cheaper to get a new one then try to have it fixed. But you may as well see if you can have someone look at it just in case.
