Help with our 'Keets name!!

The better half (Phunminnie) and me are having a little boy 'keet in August. Now, I love the name Ayslen. It is pronounced like Island without the "d" on the end...She does not like it much, but she did lose a bowling match to me over the name. Besides, she was so sure it was a girl she figured that the name would never come into play. But now that is a boy

What does everyone think???...Kind of tropical...Kind of laid back...And way different...

while it is an interesting name...your child will have trouble all of his life explaining to people how to pronounce his name...he will be called the wrong name every day on the first day of school.

I'm personally a big fan of meaningful names. I'm named for my great grandfather, my brother is named for our grandfather, my other brother is named for our great uncle. I plan to name my children after people in my family and my wife's family that have had a significant influence on our lives. That having been said, this is your son, and the two of you can call him whatever you want, but you should probably try to come to some sort of compromise with your spouse, it seems to me like you would want both parents to be pleased with, and proud of, their child's name. Also, irregular names can be something that children use to tease each other. I know this seems like it wouldn't be a big deal, but from about fourth grade through puberty, kids can be ruthless when it comes to teasing, and I know a number of people that had horrible school experiences because of it. Anyway, that's just my opinion, do with it what you like. Congratulations on the upcoming birth of your son, may he grow up strong, smart, and handsome, and make his parents proud.

Kids can and will be cruel. I work with kids every day and while such a unique name is interesting when the keet is a child, you'll also need to take into account how the child will fair in grade and middle school.

As for me, I really like the idea of naming children after family members. My girlfriend and I have talked about this numerous times and we've decided our first son will be named Cameron James (my mother's maiden name and her father's name, not the movie director.)

I like the name! I think you should go for it.

You said you could work on the spelling - maybe you could just take out the "s". I think Aylen would be pretty straightforward and wouldn't confuse people too much.

As for kids being cruel, my name was very unusual 30 years ago when I was born. People were always mis-pronouncing it. All of my classmates and friends were either named "Kristen/in" or "Jennifer". Sometimes I longed for a common name, but I got over it.

Now my name is one of the most popular names going, and I often get compliments on it. So my point is to remember that the name will be with your son his entire life. He will get over whatever inconveniences and teasings he endures when he's young, and when he's older, people will likely appreciate the beautiful-sounding and unusual name.

Also, I feel like today people are getting very creative with names. Personally I would go w/ a traditional name, but I think the world is generally accepting of unusual or original names for children. Another trend seems to be giving a child a last name as a first name, e.g., "Reilly". I think it's anything goes!

Common names can be good and bad. I am your average Joe, but so is my day Joe I, me being Joe II. So the big problem is legal confusion or credit problems.

I think it's a unique name, which is cool, but on the other hand, your kid will spend his whole life telling people how to pronounce it and how to spell it. Not so cool.

We live in Idaho there is no such thing as a funny name I have friends named Zion,who has a sister Star and another friend named Echo
that is just to name a few, I do agree with the spelling thing
and how to pronounce it .

Thanks for your responses. I am all for having a unique name but because I am a teacher I see some &%*%$%$

that kids have to go through when they have an unusual name. Not so good. If you have any suggestions, other than Camron, our friends already beat us to that one, let us know.

Should I ever have a son, his name would either be Jack Lucian (after my grandfather, Lucian August) or Jacob Gabriel...those are my votes. August is also a nice name...you could call him Gus. No matter what you pick, congrats...may he be healthy and happy!

For our third, we were so sure it would be a boy (we had two boys already) We were going to name him Finn after the Irish folk hero Finn McKool. It wasn't even really a PH thing as much as an Irish thing. I liked the name so much I wanted to change our last name to McKool!

But to our surprise, we had a girl and named her Delaney (that was a little of a PH thing).

Ok..my wife and I discussed it at length. We like it. We agree that he will always have to explain the pronunciation but after, most people will just say.."cool". We don't agree that he would be teased over a name like Aylen (which is how we thought you should spell it too

we thought the name kinda sounded tough!!

Congrats ! We just had our first keet March 11 after 20 years of being told it wouldn't happen. His name is Cameron Mitchell Dingus and he has lots of red hair like his daddy and Jimmy's Cameron as well. I'd post a pic if I knew how.

While it is true children and preteens get made fun of for wierd or different names. I also think that more and more people are naming their children names that mean something to them now. Whether it is a family name or a name of someone they hold dear. We named our sons after family members and it has worked out fine. Our younger has a very long name though that always gets questions, JohnMichael and the spelling of our older can never be found on those neat signs, shirts, etc., Erik. So, you do, in a since, have to be a little careful but, you also have to let your child know how much thought went into naming them and how special they are to have the name they are given. I work at an elementary school and that is one of the greatest things about the first day of school is the names I will learn. Anyway it is like everything else with children, you have to teach them at home what is important in your family and what isn't.
