As expected, the Dead are hitting the road again this summer. The stalwart group will kick off its plans June 12 with a previously announced appearance at the third Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, Tenn. The first leg gets into gear with a five-night stand at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colo., and will close with a July 3 pairing of the Dead and the Allman Brothers Band in George, Wash.

The second leg of the tour will crank up July 23 in Maryland Heights, Mo., and close Aug. 19 in Atlanta. The later set of dates also includes two-night stands in Mansfield, Mass. (July 30-31), Camden, N.J. (Aug. 7-8), Holmdel, N.J. (Aug. 10-11) and Wantagh, N.Y. (Aug. 13-14).

Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule) and Robert Hunter will alternate throughout the tour, opening the shows with solo acoustic sets, except for the Aug. 3 show in Hartford, Conn., where Haynes will perform between the Dead's two sets.

As previously reported, the latest incarnation of the band includes the core of Grateful Dead alums Phil Lesh (bass), Mickey Hart (drums), Billy Kreutzmann (drums) and Bob Weir (guitar), plus Jimmy Herring (guitar), Jeff Chimenti (keyboards) and Haynes (guitar/vocals). The new lineup played its first public show in February in San Francisco.

Weir says of Haynes, "He's a strong singer and a good instrumentalist."

In a recent interview, Weir told Billboard.com, "I've worked with Warren a number of times, but in the past I've always worked counter to, against what he was doing instrumentally. That's not gonna work in the current context of the Dead. What we're gonna need to do is work as one, otherwise it's just gonna be too crowded. There's just not going to be room for all that instrumentation in the music."

"That said, I think we made significant progress in doing that [at the San Francisco show]," he said. "We were pairing what we were doing, trying to work as basically one unit, a section -- the rhythm guitar section. "

"Of course, Warren's gonna take leads and stuff like that, and I probably will as well and there's always Jimmy," he added. "But, when he's not taking a lead, he and I, our instruments have to be one voice. As a matter of fact, it's an opportunity to do something fairly amazing that I have not heard yet. I'm sure that it's been done from time to time, but at high volumes in highly improvisational music, to be able to drift and be of one voice is going to be a thrill, once we get it going on a sustained basis. I'm looking forward to this."

Weir, who last month released the two-disc studio/live retrospective "Weir Here" (Hybrid), also said the reincarnated Dead will probably release new music at some point in the future. The difference from past Dead albums, he believes, will likely be a non-traditional approach to the recording process.

"The technology is such that we can take whatever we're doing in the studio --and we'll be in the studio to rehearse -- and we can record that," he explained. "We can take that on the road with us, work with that on the road and bring it back. What used to be studio recordings will be different now.

"We'll be able to do that and have an audience in front of us now, and I think that's going to be more fulfilling for everybody."

Dead Raise the Tour Flag

Summer dates set with Allmans, Robert Hunter

The Dead will use their June 12th appearance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival as the springboard for the Wave That Flag summer tour. The road vets have lined up another thirty-five dates that will keep them on stage into mid-August.

Following Bonnaroo, held on a farm in Manchester, Tennessee, the group will head out to the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado, a regular stop in the Grateful Dead Days, for a five-night stand. The tour is currently scheduled to wrap on August 19th in Atlanta. The Dead lineup will include Grateful Dead principals Bob Weir (guitar/vocals), Phil Lesh (bass) and Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann (drums), as well as more recent additions Jeff Chimenti (keyboards) and Warren Haynes and Jimmy Herring (guitars).

Haynes and Robert Hunter will play select solo sets as openers throughout the tour. Starting July 3rd, Haynes will do triple duty, as the Allman Brothers Band -- for which he also plays guitar -- will join the Dead for the remainder of the tour.

IMHO the Allman Bros should be headlining their own show....

That is what I meant. That and the two just don't seem a good pairing to me. You may disagree and thats ok.

I'm not sure why they wouldn't make a good pairing especially given their history (Watkins-Glen, one of the biggest concerts ever) and the fact they're both "jam" bands and share much of the same audience (if not the same audience). Not to mention the amount of touring various members of both bands have done together in recent years. Disagree or not, I'm not sure what's not to like.

I've seen and love both of these bands (Allman Brothers and the Dead when Jerry was still around)...I think it would make a great, though long show!

I'd go if I didn't have a wedding in GA to go to! Wait a minute.......actually NISSAN would be my absolute first pick! :D

Same here, so I'm a bit baffled as to why someone wouldn't find them to be less than a perfect fit. It's not like they've never toured together before or their music is radically different from the other. In fact, the Allmans have often been referred to as an "East Coast version of the Grateful Dead".
