Not sure about hotel tailgating, but Cheeseburger in Paradise had a big outdoor pre-party. Jimmy even briefly stopped by.

It's my first time at an Indy concert too. I think we might stop and party at cheeseburger in paradise before checking into our hotel.
We're staying at the Holiday Inn Express NE. They offer a Buffett party pack. That includes a pre party (band, booze and food), transportation to and from the concert, post party and even a breakfast the next morning.

There are 3 hotels within crawling (literally) distance of Cheeseburger in Paradise, and the Indy club and CiP will both have buses (club is thursday only, CiP is both shows). I would suggest going to Cheeseburger instead of the Holiday Inn- I think even the package deal through CiP will be less expensive, and I know that the band will be better. And they're close enough to run back and forth should you forget anything, or if it's heinously hot and you want to go shower (or play in the pool) It is a good 45 minute drive from Cheeseburger to that hotel- without traffic. Tailgating at the venue is non-existent unless you're on a bus, then it's a maybe. The hotel is also about a 20 minute ride from the venue as well.

No, last year it was the Nace Brothers. (I think) I believe the same band is going to be there this year. But, I can't garuntee that. Also, I know that the local Indianapolis club is working on a pre-party. There will be busses and possibly a hotel package. I'm pretty sure it will be a hotel close to CiP so you could join in with the CiP pre-party.
