Warren Haynes and producer Michael Barbiero are currently in New York mixing Gov't Mule's upcoming album, set for September release on ATO Records. The still-untitled set will be the band's first with bass player Andy Hess, who succeeds a cast of players featured on Mule's recent "Deep End" albums.
Those sets -- two volumes of studio recordings and "The Deepest End: Live In Concert" CD/DVD package -- paid tribute to Allen Woody, who died in August 2000. Mule is rounded out by drummer Matt Abts and longtime sideman Danny Louis, now a permanent member, on keyboards.
"I've been going back and trying to figure out if there's a theme to it," Haynes tells Billboard.com in an exclusive interview. "I feel like whatever I needed to get off my chest in the past is now gone, and I'm able to look at other issues and subjects, different angles and perspectives. It seems to be a lot about life, and moving forward, gaining a new perspective on life. Not all the songs, but a few of them are like that.
"There's a lot of departures on this record," he adds. "Songs that are different than anything Gov't Mule's ever done. Although they may not be such a stretch for us, the audience may see it as quite a departure because we've never gone down that road before. But I feel like, this is our sixth album, it's our fourth 'band' album, and we really owe it to ourselves to just explore all the different directions that we feel in touch with."
At the conclusion of mixing, Haynes and Gov't Mule will kick off a tour April 14 at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, Ore.; it concludes April 29 at Stubb's BBQ in Austin, Texas.
Before heading out again with the Mule, Haynes will, as previously reported, tour this summer with the Dead. Along with Haynes, the group features longtime Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, as well as Jimmy Herring and Jeff Chimenti.
Haynes will also perform with the Allman Brothers, who will tour July 3-July 17 and play selected dates beginning Aug. 20.
"It's going to be a nutty year for me!" Haynes remarks. "This is four in a row that are really, really crazy, and five or six in a row that have been fairly nuts. This is probably going to be the craziest of all, but I'm really looking forward to it. To be blessed with these kinds of opportunities and challenges is pretty amazing. I definitely don't look at it lightly."

Jahfin,
Have you ever seen Warren live ? I have seen him with ABB and solo and with Gov't Mule. Solo he is awesome, with the ABB he is fantastic but I don't like the Mule.
A few years ago the Atl paper (piece of crap that it is) had an article about an upcoming concert with Gov't Mule in Atlanta. They pictured former, dead guitarist Alen Woody. At the time he was already dead and had been for two years. I emailed them and blistered them for being so stupid. Anyway, I have met Warren, Alen and Matt several times. Great guys but unless their other efforts without Alen was different it is just not so great.

When they run you out of town make it look like you are leading the parade.
Only with the Allman Brothers Band circa the tour for Shades of Two Worlds. He and Dickey let Derek Trucks get up on stage to take the lead on "One Way Out" and I was blown away to say the least.12vmanRick wrote:Jahfin, Have you ever seen Warren live ?
I also may of seen him with David Allan Coe many years ago when he was part of David's backing band but going by what I've heard from other people, I don't think Warren was with him on that particular tour (Human Emotions-1978).

I didn't know Warren worked with him. I saw Warren and met him during the Tales of Ordinary Madness (his solo album) tour. That enabled me to get backstage for ABB and meet the other guys in ABB.Jahfin wrote:Only with the Allman Brothers Band circa the tour for Shades of Two Worlds. I was working for a radio station at the time of the ABB show I previously mentioned so we were allowed to take part in the meet and great. We met Gregg and Jaimoe but Dickey Betts was nowhere to found.12vmanRick wrote:I didn't know Warren worked with him. At the risk of sounding like a smart ass (which isn't my intention at all) I'd say Warren was with them since it's pretty much his band.rednekkPH wrote:Saw Govt. Mule a few years back - dunno if Warren was with them or not. I was not impressed at all with the performance.

I met everyone that night but Greg. He had gone to hide on the bus but I knew a lady that worked with Warren back there and she got my ABB boxed set book signed by Greg. I met Greg several OTHER times though.Jahfin wrote:I was working for a radio station at the time of the ABB show I previously mentioned so we were allowed to take part in the meet and great.
